Sorry. Even then, only in very special circumstances will it achieve peak efficiency. Read: "Recent tests by IBM show that the SPEs can reach 98% of their theoretical peak performance using optimized parallel Matrix Multiplication".

Very rarely in real world or gaming calculations are you performing parallel Matrix Multiplication or using DP calculations. Its SP percision is only about 160GFlops. Don't forget that 2 out of every 8 cores can't be put towards games as 1 is reserved for the PS3 OS and the other is disabled to improve factory yields. So your only getting 75% of your cores right off the bat decreasing your theortical 160 GFlops for sp calculations to 3/4ths (120G flops).

Regardless, a 5870 is 2.4 Teraflops and a 5970 is 4.7 Teraflops without overclocking which blows the Sony PS3's cell processor measily 0.09 to 0.12 Teraflops way. What i think is happening is that most people don't really see the point of buying the powercell when they can get reasonable performance at a waaay cheaper price which comes with its motherboard and ram for hell of a lot less compared to just buying the processor alone. add to that the fact that cell is a weird hybrid between a cpu and gpu, (its easier to program than a gpu but hell of a lot harder than a cpu) and you can see why most acedemic institutions and corporations avoid it completely (if their work is completely parallel they choose a powerful gpu, otherwise its a powerful multicore cpu). That said i do agree with you in that they will probably add at least 2 more cores into their cell and have the same number of spe's as it does right now in order to preserve compatibility along with a graphics card that is equivalent to that of an 8800 or ati's 4800 series

WEEEGEEE!

Comments on Console scuttlebutt: multi-core CPU for next-gen PlayStation, Intel inside future Wii

i dont understand why this article keeps referencing "wii 2." was there a gamecube 2? no. was there an n64 2? no. was there a snes 2? no.

Nintendo always changes up their next console. its not going to be "the next wii" so stop calling it that.

extra2491

Comments on Console scuttlebutt: multi-core CPU for next-gen PlayStation, Intel inside future Wii

@Troll

I think there might be a Wii 2 this time.
