They fixed it on the HD, and now they're going back? Come on!

Love my Series3, love my cards, but it's a pain in the ass location. I had to have Cox come out 3 times in a year to deal with cable issues (mostly their fault, but there were booster issues because I was living in the boonies and 100+ feet from the drop), and every time I had to yank my box out of my stand so they had "easy access".

Yes please to the Series4! I called TiVo to report this and have them deactivate it. They said "you must buy a new one. We don't deactivate stolen ones until your new one it replaces your old one in our system." OK....so I bought a cheap Core 2 Duo PC with Windows 7 Media Center and a tuner card in it and I've not looked back. Win7 works nearly as well as a TiVo (Redmond has a few kinks to work out) and even has some features TiVo HD lacks. And it was pretty easy to set up. There are alternatives out there. TiVo impresses me as a company that is resting on its laurels; they should have a new model out every year to maintain public interest, they should have more deals with cable companies to be "The" DVR standard, and they should have a satellite tuner solution. Until then, they're missing a myriad of opportunities, such as keeping me as a customer.

JKT

Comments on TiVo planning a new "Premiere" DVR?

Okay, I know this is a little off topic from the cable card part and more of a "wai...what?" moment, but why does the post say "no S-video or phone jack"? It doesn't have a dial up modem for getting updates and guide information. I don't know why anybody would want to use a dial up modem for Tivo service unless they don't have broadband or they just don't like the idea of hooking it up to their lan. It also supports Wifi through a USB adapter.

My Samsung cable boxes have no S-Video ports on them and they use a Broadcom chip. Maybe Tivo is using that particular one. I think it's more like a cost reduced Series 3 with some enhanced hardware. The top cover might have a gazillion holes on it to deal with ventilation. Thats what most digital cable boxes use and it works fine for keeping them cool and quiet.

rendezvous65

Comments on TiVo planning a new "Premiere" DVR?

@rv65 Ah, good point. The TiVo unit invasive contract is without a doubt a step in the wrong direction. You purchase the unit however never own it. A monthly fee is required to use TiVo and yet they stockpile user-viewing habits for their profit. I summit if TV has encompassed your lives at this level just maybe it is time to revaluate your life. A person subscribing to this type of tyranny is setting precedence for corporations to further strip us of our property rights.

okwhen

Comments on TiVo planning a new "Premiere" DVR?

@okwhen

No monthly fee is required to use TiVo.
