By removing the mirror, the register distance can be reduced, thereby allowing lenses to move closer to the sensor. This is a huge advantage for wide angle lenses; traditional SLR wide angles require a reverse telephoto design, which increases the number of glass elements, in turn reducing image quality and increasing price. A mirrorless system eliminates this need for exotic lens designs. Also, in contrast to the Oly micro 4/3 system, the sensor in the Samsung is APS-C, which is twice the size and can thus make comparable bokeh with lenses that are one stop slower. Or make more bokeh with a lens of the same speed. This is a huge advantage for portrait shooters like me and I am seriously considering moving from my Pentax system to this Sammy.

bigcow05

Comments on

@bigcow05

Not so good for those who are shooting landscapes, however, because an EVF/Live View just don't have the correct light/colour recreation that a good Pentaprism provide.

It makes it harder to focus and adjust aperture, and means you have to fiddle around with colour and gamma before you can even take a shot.

CJ

Comments on

@CJ

I think I have to disagree here :(

Color doesn't get any more accurate than with a live view. You are seeing the actual image after all, not one that has gone through an additional set of optics and the coatings associated with them. Also, serious photogs will shoot in RAW mode, so you will be able to adjust color balance in postprocessing anyway.

Focus should be more accurate as well. Many high-end live view cameras offer almost pixel-level precision in the manual focus zoom mode. Moreover, with landscapes, you'll be shooting with a small aperture, so depth of field shouldn't be a problem.

Additional benefits include live histogram and many more focus points. I can't stress enough how important the live histogram is to me, especially in situations where I don't get a second chance.

The real downsides to this system are that there is no ttl phase detection af and the slower VF refresh rate. The refresh rate isn't really a problem for landscapes and portraits though. As for street photography, I use a normal lens with both eyes open so it won't be a big deal for me either. If you are a sports photographer, you shouldn't use this camera as your primary rig, but then again this system would have no size advantage over a normal dslr at focal lengths of over 50mm.

bigcow05

Comments on

Placement of Cameras reminds me of a scene from the movie Requiem for a Dream.

Teslanaut

Comments on

Sorry, but for me, no Pentaprism = No sale.

Electronic viewfinders just don't have the focus quality that I need.

CJ

Comments on

I hate to only add negative point to this but if 4/3 and micro 4/3 are fighting a uphill fight against canon and nikon, samsung is going to have quite a fight on it's hands. Point and shoots are close enough in quality to entry level dslr cameras to offer a lot of competition on the low end and the idea of a totally new lens system is not going to win over hardly anyone wanting to step up in quality to a dslr. That and the fact that with a body that slim there is going to be a lot of torque on the lens mount so unless it is made rather well ( and that is kind of don't think a totally lens mount will be unless it is also expensive) it can be unreliable or pricey and if it is either people will ignore it as a competitor to the market leaders canon and nikon plus 3200 iso is good but for a new model and to help it standout in the market 6400 iso would be better since that is were the market is going, especially with a aps-c sized sensor

I really like were the panasonic GF1 and the olympus EP-2 are taking micro 4/3's as a alternative to full-size dslr cameras even is they are a bit pricey because you can use all kinds of lenses from other manufactures with cheap adapters and have the flexability of having a small size or a big zoom depending on which lens you carry versus a regular dslr which is sort of bulky either way.

mr.gabriel.serna

Comments on

I never knew Samsung made an SLR.
