So for $739.99, it's really going to screeaaamm??
Give me a break!!
How the heck are they doing it "at customers request" when they have cages full of *already pre-optimized* computers? Did they already pre-consult with the customer whether they would like that Skype shortcut on the desktop or not? I pointed out the recovery disc creator that was prominently staring at us from the desktop and that you just put i the required # of DVD's and it does it itself. Windows updates take care of themselves in the background. Security software, i use Avira or M.S Security Essentials, and he countered that free A/V software (even from Microsoft itself) does more harm than good because they're "free".

After i declined services that i personally didn't see any value in and personally didn't need, than the circus began. First he had to check if they have them in stock without optimization, and he disappeared for a good 10 mins. Then he had to wait for keys to the lockup because the keyholder might have taken them by accident out of the dept and so on. After another 10 mins, told im not to bother and in his presence and full view i went to a demo laptop, went to their site and did an in-store pickup. I was looking for a laptop and after I narrowed it down to two I got an associate to help me out with the finer details between them. After deciding to go with a $900 Sony Vaio the salesman tried sell me Kapersky AntiVirus for $70 he said the software was already installed on the computer. When I looked at the lockup, all the laptops I could see had the tape cut and kapersky was taped to the back of the box, so I can only imagine that he was telling the truth about it being installed on all the laptops. I told him that I didn't want Kapersky and he said he'd have to have Geek Squad uninstall it. While I was waiting for that to be done the salesman found me and said that he found a box that didn't have the antivirus software installed. The box was still had the tape cut though and seeing as how the computer didn't take 5 minutes to start initially and had no bloatware on it other than a trial of norton and office I'd imagine that it might have had the "pre-optimization" done. If that's the case, I wasn't charged for it though.

I don't like the fact that all the boxes were opened and that customer's aren't given the chance to purchase an unmolested computer like they once were but I guess that's life. Firstly there is much more to the tweaks than this tiny two minute video describes, and consumer reports isn't exactly the most reliable source of information ever. It is a worthwhile service for those consumers who don't know a whole lot about technology. And by the way, not all of Best Buy's computers are sold pre-optimized. If the consumer wants the service done, having systems done is a time saver. If they do not want it then a brand new system is sold. Many of you have a bad experience with one or maybe a couple of employees and then bash the entire company for having illegitimate business practices. There is a little thing called the Better Business Bureau. Contact them if you have a problem.

Secondly, there is a reason why products are marked up. It's so that people can have a job. If any big-box electronics retailer sold everything at cost then, like when Circuit City or CompUSA/Good Guys closed their doors, how many people will be without jobs. Best Buy currently employs over 160,000 people worldwide. What help would that give the global economy?

senoj

Comments on Best Buy's $40 'pre-optimization' determined to be worthless, iPhone earbuds determined to be white

@MrMadness. so for $40 they will fill in the forms in the setup assistant and run software update. and then charge me $500 to transfer my 1 TB of data to my computer.

OR for $99 I can have someone set up my computer, run software updates, transfer my info from my old computer (pc or mac) AND get a year of training that includes such things as how to run software updates myself. and use my email, web browser, ilife, iwork etc.

as for the service contract, does it include accidental damage, loss and theft insurance. if it does great. if not, forget it, AppleCare all the way. cause then I know that the guys working on my computer were fully trained and certified by Apple and I'm not getting some Geek with a text book on the table next to him.

Charli

Comments on Best Buy's $40 'pre-optimization' determined to be worthless, iPhone earbuds determined to be white

class action lawsuit?

APasserBy

Comments on Best Buy's $40 'pre-optimization' determined to be worthless, iPhone earbuds determined to be white

@WasAPasserBy

I don't see how. The last time I bought a machine from there was about two years ago because they had the best deal on one. I got a sealed box, but I had to check out through the geek squad desk instead of the regular registers. This ended up taking at least 3 times a long because they only had 1 person running a register and their mouth trying to nickel and dime every customer for every worthless service under the sun. Even after telling the person that pulled the laptop and took it up to the geek squad area that I did not want them to touch it, I still had to decline 3 different services. I told them the first thing I was going to do was create the restore media, because they make you burn it yourself now, and then completely reload the machine with my own software. So I was not going to pay them to do a damn thing to it because it would be pointless. So after waiting in line while the rest of the regular cashiers sat mostly idle I got a completely untouched by Best Buy laptop truly brand new in box. I then complete wiped all traces of the factory load and had a truly optimized PC.

So now if I can not walk in and walk back out with a machine brand new in box, but instead have to wait overnight for the black shirt monkeys to finish screwing with it, I will never buy another machine from Best Buy regardless of how good a deal it is.

kal326

Comments on Best Buy's $40 'pre-optimization' determined to be worthless, iPhone earbuds determined to be white

@iDavey I work in Best Buy computer sales and the management forces us to push these services, they tell us to spend a minute over-viewing the computer and 6 minutes discussing all the services we offer. I remember a while back I saw 2GB DDR2 SODIMMs for $149.99 or something ridiculous like that. Then they had one model on sale for $49.99 SAVE $100, which was about what you could get them for at retail from Microcenter and a few bucks higher then newegg.

Now they offer somewhat decently priced memory that is for available online only while anything sold in store is way over priced. Example 4GB 2x2GB kit available online only is $84.99. A 2GB stick in store is $69.99 or $72.99. An extra $40 that's difficult to get out of since a number of their machines are apparently "optimised only", and has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft at all, only Best Buy trying to screw people with optimisation that isn't optimising a thing. You will never, ever, ever, see a rebranded iPhone just because of this.
