Designing a box that is not friendly to stacking. A/V equipment has traditionally been stacked, and will continue to be. Server racks are the width they are based on the precedent set by A/V gear and A/V racks. There have been standards in place for decades. This flies in the face of those standards and I think folks have every right to whine about it. I like to play with A/V toys computers and Media PCs, and I can say that I was intrigued by the Boxee appliance until the moment I saw the ridiculous design. If they are willing to dismiss all the functionality of a stackable box for a gimmicky shape, what else are they going to compromise on to appear cool.

I also think the PS3 is lame for the lack of stackability. The XBOX360 gets off with a stern warning, since it is actually stackable depending on the size of the gizmo you would place on it.

RandomGuy

Comments on Hands-on with the Boxee Box

@dslate I doubt it was a design decision influenced by a desire not to make it stack-able. I still don't see how the popcorn hour, wii, wdtv or any of the new media players hitting the market are more stackable. What is someone going to stack on a wdtv? I don't think these devices are designed to support other devices or cool efficiently with people treating them like legos. Is everyone out of shelf space? Doesn't something have to be on top anyway? Why can't it be this device? Problem solved.

dslate

Comments on Hands-on with the Boxee Box

@RandomGuy So any device that isn't spec'd to fit in a rack is crap?
I just think any complaining doesn't make logical sense when it if it were shaped like the wdtv it would be no more stackable.

dslate

Comments on Hands-on with the Boxee Box

@dslate Yeah I agree somewhat. Devices that are stackable to me seem to traditionally have come as a package even if it was using multiple components. DVD players ect all are different size and shapes so there has always been some problem anyway. I doubt too many people have that many components that it matters and if they do they could have shelled out for a horizontal unit rather than one with a lot of vertical room.

That said, I think a flat top would still be better. Better use of space and no loss of function.
