I do not think the Kindle itself is a game changer, I think that "ebook readers that have cellular connectivity to a major bookstore and remote (PC/Mobile) access to the content" is the game changer. The device is not what's important, its the content and the accessibility.
Amazon I feel will continue to be strong, as they seem to have the most books out there and the first to market, but whomever can reduce the headache of getting the content onto the device will succeed. Amazon has done a great job in that arena. I hope that the competition continues, which will only make the products better for the consumer.

Sidenote: Remember the Rio Riot, and how hard it was to get your mp3's on there? That being considered, it is difficult to get that demographic interested in a new device to replace very familiar books. The ace-in-the-hole is of course e-ink which is startlingly similar to the look of an actual book. Add in the ability to have thousands of books on hand or available through a wireless service with no fees and we have a winner. The people who want a multitasking tablet and the people who want a dedicated eReader probably barely overlap. In fact, the kind of people who buy Kindles I bet have no interest in a tablets or other LCD/LED/OLED screened multitasking devices. The DX has always been $489 has it not? Or at least $4XX something?

What gets me is when I add it to cart, I figure I'll get a little case for it too:

$490 = Kindle DX
$50 = Leather Case
$70 = Import Fee (???)
$27 = Shipping (!... @_@)

That's before I get dinged at the border for taxes and duties. While they're great for note taking and writing all over PDF's (my teachers would provide blank tests in PDF format and i'd write all over it, save to PDF and hand back in via usb key/email) they've got some flaws:
- They're still expensive
- The battery life is 2-5 hours at most
- They're about 3-4 pounds if you get a convertible one, much heavier then a dedicated ebook reader.
- If you get a convertible one (which aside from Motion Computing's line, most are) that's basically a little laptop. There's something about buying a whole laptop just to read books that baffles me.

I own an eee PC, the 1000HE and I highly recommend it netbook wise, its the only model I've seen in the past year with an actual 8-9 hour battery life (7.5-8.5 in my real world use). All the new models are just cosmetic differences, the same keyboard and touchpad I have, perhaps the newer 1368x768 screens, but still.

Netbooks are awesome, tablets are cool.
