The content industry blames pirates and piracy for every ill in their life, but the one thing they won't admit is that people just don't want to deal with them anymore. People don't want to buy a movie they bought on VHS and DVD on Blu-ray. People don't want to have to pay for both an HD and a portable version of their movie. People want to be able to stream their videos to all of their devices. And people don't want to deal with DRM.

Sorry content industry, you've dicked consumers over for nearly 50 years, but your free ride is over. Now, we obviously don't know anything about how these system will work since they only exist on paper, this could be what you are asking for. I don't know that I necessarily would say that people hate DRM - its that they hate DRM that gets in the way of doing what we want to do. If I had a system which would let me buy a BD, xfer it to a portable, burn a copy to DVD and do do this all off-line, I would be ok with it even if it did have DRM.

mikeb12345

Comments on DECE & Keychest both laying claim to friendly DRM of the future title

"a DRM solution that works for consumers"
...there's an oxymoron in there somewhere. It presupposes that the customer is a crook and unless measures are take to shackle the customer into as narrow a set of limitations as possible, the customer will take every opportunity 100% of the time to do something illegal with the product.

Now I'm not in any way backing piracy. Yes I have a few files here and there that were copied from someone else etc. It's hard to find a computer on the planet that doesn't. But that doesn't mean everyone is automatically a pirate nor does it justify the draconian measures company take with DRM. Legally I have the right to make as many copy's as I want in as many formats as I want... for my own use. Most DRM makes it imposable to do without breaking other laws (such as circumventing DRM). Just exercising your rights given with one law is breaking the law with another law.

There has to be a change somehow. I have no idea what the right way is to satisfy both consumer rights and company's rights. There was a time when you could loan a book to anyone, copy any music you had from the radio, LP player, or tape deck to another tape, tape off the TV with your VCR and give it to a friend. All entirely legal. Now only the lending of a book is legal and they are trying to take that away to. Consumers have lost rights and company's say they have lost money. Why are both sides loosing?? I think it's DRM but the company's will tell you it's not. I'm pretty sure of this because I used to buy ton's of music on LP's and audio cassettes and gave out copy's freely to friends. There's ton's of new music I like but I rarely buy a CD because they are 1) expensive (higher percent of my income) and 2) generally only have 1 good song and 3) The law is still in conflict over weather I can share with friends or even make copy's for myself etc. I also rarely buy MP3's. 1) they have to be 100% DRM free, 2) the law is again uncertain because there are still conflicting laws as to what I can and can not do. 3) Until the laws are sorted out and there is a fair and equitable solution for consumers and company's (yes I car about company's and musicians. Need them to make the music for me.) I'm just going to listen to what I like for free on Pandora. Problem solved for now, except for when I go on a walk or am in the car. I guess this was to long and wordy to make a simple point and I'm to tired to go back and edit it down. Sorry. But DRM in general has just pissed me off from day one.

XenoTheSilly

Comments on DECE & Keychest both laying claim to friendly DRM of the future title

maybe this idea will be friendly: social DRM?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv1LpAKXIO4

Tomasz
