I own a HTC touch phone and have owned a WinMo 2003 pocket pc. Sad to say that the operating system has not been revamped since then. I put 6.5 on my phone but re-flashed it because it wasn't that different. The calender application is still garbage for crying out loud. @pavlindrom Yes I would only consider buying a new WinMo phone if they completely revamped there OS as Palm did. Even then it would be a hard sale for me. With the openess of android an the number of apps of the IPhone there is not a lot of market left. MS's two biggest issue are whether they get into the hardware end of it at all (where there's more money than licensing), or do a Google "half in half out" partnership. When was Googles IPO? They didnt become relevant until they went public just ask the share holders (Myself). Our money helped release software that youre playing with right now (Android/Chromium). Android and other OS's pushed MSFT to better their platform (WM7/Windows 7). I disagree, the type of software Google and Microsoft make are quite different in most aspects. So you can't compare Microsoft and Google directly in terms of software quality.

Not saying that all Microsoft products has been rock solid, but they seem to be on track now with Windows 7 and the Zune. Seriously though, WM has always been very flexible, and has been stable since WM 6. I've also been able to do stream media from my home to my phone for a few years now, and although the official app marketplace is horribly understocked, for long time users, it's easy to find an app that does just about anything.

One of the biggest problem with WM phones has been putting the OS on underpowered devices, as MS was happy to license to just about anyone (there's a reason HTC has excelled over the past few years, while others fell to the wayside). With the very strict requirements for WM7, as leaked early last year and more or less confirmed by the release of the HD2, that should be a thing of the past. I've actually been very happy all the freely available MS apps (Voice Command and the latest Bing app are great). The biggest drawback is the disparate experience of each.

I am excited for wm7 because Microsoft knows it has to "up its game" to compete with the Android interface. People are tired of the same old WM. So lets see if they drop the ball.

...however, what they did with windows 7 os makes me hopeful that they finally get it.

While I think Android has made vast improvements since it was originally released it still doesn't offer basic business functionality I need that WM has and iphone now has. I think iphone is great but HATE ATT and Tmobile for service where I live and ever place I work and travel to. The number of people that own smartphones, in relation to those that own simple feature phones or less, is MINUSCULE.

The idea that the # of people with them is the final number that will ever own one is absurd. The pie for WM has not shrunk as much as the pie has gotten bigger as WM numbers remained steady.

Competitors got more of that expanding pie, however WM only recently went from 2 to 3.

The point is that the smart-phone market is not a zero sum game. The key is to catch the new folks coming in. And that race really hasn't even begun. You can have 10 new smartphone OS come out in the next 3 years and there will still be room for more.

I see what you're saying and you're right to a certain extent. My point is they basically inherited the mobile market from the dying Palm, and then squandered it. But the thing about mindshare is that it's not hard to get.

Android went from being derided for its first year to being the darling of the mobile world. It's still behind WM in usage though, so mindshare is easy to get but doesnt mean squat in marketshare.

Microsoft has never truly advertised WM like the iPhone or Droid has.

Motorola's small ad campaign of the Droid nearly sold them more of their device than the iPhone this past quarter.
