Modder merges Bose headphones with inline Apple remote, shows you how (video)
Everybody knows that Apple's default headphones aren't the best, and while many would argue that those from Bose aren't exactly top-notch either, they're surely a step up. What if you want Cupertino's inline controls and some over-the-ear isolation from Framingham's most famous foreign-sounding speaker company? That's what Freddy Deeble wanted, and that's what he achieved. What seems like a challenging feat is actually a reasonably straightforward mod if you have some soldering skills -- and a general disregard for warranties. The whole process is described in a thoroughly helpful video after the break but, as always, don't call us if you wind up with a set of severed wires and a smoldering pile of rosin.
[Thanks, Freddy]

lol bose
@Mushrooshi
Why are you laughing? Bose just does what Apple does. Looks and marketing over function and price.
Apple and Bose is marriage made in hell.
@Proud Japanese Now if you could some how get the line from the ipod to bose speaker to be a monster cable...
@Mushrooshi
What's your problem with Bose? They're the perfect headphones for this. You don't want to risk screwing up a good set of headphones with a mod.
@Mushrooshi although im not a big bose fan, the bose on ear headphones are actually the most comfortable headphones i ever used and even sound great. only problem is they cost about 3x too much.
@Mushrooshi
I'd say that BOSE is a bit more stylish than that other shit you lot peddle.
@Proud Japanese At least Apple still has function
Technically it does matter which wires you solder where. When you solder the wrong conductors to the opposite connectors the speaker is, as they say in the pro audio world, "out of phase". %99 percent of people will not be able to notice the audio being slightly out of phase, thats why people say it doesn't matter. However, I have Bose model 100 speakers and if I get the connectors opposite I can tell that my speakers are not working in unison and quickly change the connectors.
@Jacob Apple Geek Basically the peaks and troughs are inverted so it doesn't sound 'quite' right.
@richb93 Yes. In essence you are cancelling out your audio.
@Jacob Apple Geek I am not quite sure if it would actually matter in the case of headphones. When you have two sets of speakers in a room and one box is wired incorrectly, some of the sounds are in fact removed through destructive interference. When you add two signals together, in this case sounds, the result is the sum of two the voltages. If one is positive and the other is negative, it is close to zero. When they are both positive or negative, the sum is close to 2x that of a single channel.
When this is done to head phone though, there would be no chance for the signals to mix since they're going straight to your ear, eliminating the chance for destructive interference to take its toll.
@dcm684
Actually, there will be some sort of "phase distortion" even though your brain and auditory nerves are processing the sound.
Ever heard of binaural beats?
Left ear get one frequency, right ear gets another, and your brain sum the two frequencies to form the sum (or the difference depending on the freq polarity)
Why are you laughing? Bose just does what Apple does. Looks and marketing over function and price.
Apple and Bose is marriage made in hell.
Bose + Apple = double crap.
@G I I hope this gets voted down to oblivion.
why ruin a perfectly good apple remote?
sorry engadget - this has been done before, and yes, by me (i know, im great ;P)

@d4n13l
holy NSFW link there buddy. (second one)
@FNG headphone porn?
@d4n13l Gesundheit.
LOL @ above comments.
I don't mind Bose products but there a company I would not spend a fortune on if I were to buy.
@Dusty luckily, it was a present ;)
I just wish someone could do this for my UE-11's... Which wouldn't even ruin the warranty.
Or how about you not destroy 2 accessories, just cut off the leads to the earbuds after the remote and just before the bud and solder them into a 3.5mm headphone jack? Then you can plug in ANY headphones you want into it!
@SirDrinksAlot I thought the same thing, but then I realize that you would have a very long cable going to your headphones. And at what point is the remote too far to be considered a better alternative to pressing the volume buttons on the iPod?
@dcm684
Then what do you do if you need another pair of headphones?
... and for my next trick, I'll show you how to transplant a Kia engine into a PT Cruiser!
and for my next trick I'll plug speaker wire into a speaker and create a video and call it a "mod"
Bö$e LoooooL
Apple has at least best build quality (Bö$e and build quality LooooL nothing there)
Apple makes unique own product and unique OS. Eithe you love it or you hate it (Bo$e makes unique s§it, cheapest built quality and cheapest spare parts)
duct tape. The best thing $2 can buy. Love it.
This would be cooler if a good pair of headphones was used
modding? shows us how? OH PLEASE SIR, TELL ME HOW TO SOLDER.
im 10, lay off
superbly done but i don't think many will risk their bose headphones like you did
