See the whole goal is to get one eye to see one image and the other eye to see a completely different but similar image. If they put some magical polarized film over the whole screen then both of your eyes would be seeing the same image.

So an easy way to show people this, is to hold up your polarized glasses to the screen. Notice when you don't look through the lenses, you see a double image. Then when you look through either eye, you see a single image. Well what the guy didn't realize is that each of those lenses is filtering out a different image. So even though they look Awfully similar, they are different.

so now think of what it would take to project an image to each of your eyes separately, and to more than one person in a sweet spot in the room and you will understand why glasses are gonna be here for a while

RandomGuy

Comments on Panasonic blows it out with 3D Blu-ray deck, HDTVs, channels and $21k camcorder

@Mentat 20 pairs ? Well the shutter glasses are going to be a fraction of the amount of tax that people pay for the TV. I've got Nvidia shutter glasses myself, and the kit cost $200 for the glasses, IR transmitter, storage pouch, cleaning cloth, charging cable, and some very sexy packaging. Panasonic, I think, estimated that glasses will be closer to the $50-60 mark. Not cheap, of course, but even if you've got 5 regular viewers of 3D content, $250-300 is a small price to pay for the Big Thing in home entertainment for this decade. Polarized screens are something I'm less sold on.

The thing I don't get from this posting, and people's response, is the complaining that only one pair of glasses is included. The glasses aren't free just because they come with the TV. If it comes with 5 pairs, you're paying for 5 pairs on top of the regular TV cost. I'd imagine that the 95% of people who don't immediately want to use 3D tech are going to be irritated that they paid extra for glasses they don't need, if anything.

Twile

Comments on Panasonic blows it out with 3D Blu-ray deck, HDTVs, channels and $21k camcorder

@Twile Agree on all this whining about glasses... The PS3 comes with one controller and extra controllers are about the same cost as an extra pair of glasses will be. You'll buy as many as you want/need/can afford. What they're not saying there is that rendering a game for 3D viewing requires twice the performance. Because your PS3 isn't getting any faster any time soon, that either means you're getting half the framerate or half the pixel count. On a PC which can churn out 90-120 fps, that's fine, you get 45-60 which is totally playable. On a game console which can struggle to maintain 30, things might get uncomfortably close to single digits. Even the 60 fps which smart developers aspired towards is going to be feeling the hurt a bit when framerate is halved to 30.

Me, I'd be happy with a system that can get 120 fps to each eye. Having to pick between the buttery smoothness of 120 fps, and 60 fps 3D... it's painful. I'd rather just throw money at the problem for more graphics cards.

Twile

Comments on Panasonic blows it out with 3D Blu-ray deck, HDTVs, channels and $21k camcorder

You think the glasses you get from the movie theater would work for 3d tv

Lucien

Comments on Panasonic blows it out with 3D Blu-ray deck, HDTVs, channels and $21k camcorder

@snyluc13

depends on the tv. most home tvs are going to use active shutter technology, which will not be compatible with the glasses you get from the theater.

enjoytheride823

Comments on Panasonic blows it out with 3D Blu-ray deck, HDTVs, channels and $21k camcorder

@enjoytheride823 Gotcha, I think I'll wait till the TVs have been out for quite some time before I go out and get one, thanks

Lucien

Comments on Panasonic blows it out with 3D Blu-ray deck, HDTVs, channels and $21k camcorder

Until 3D is available to those without silly glasses, this isn't going to take off at all.
