I think it's "cool" from an observer of technology perspective... but for practical value - 2" is just about as thin as 6mm (for me) [insert joke about what she said].
If I was in the market, and the 6mm was only a manageable price increase over 2", then I'd think about it. But I certainly wouldn't be in a hurry to replace an already acceptably svelte set for a new one, just so I can brag to my friends that it is thinner.

Well, obviously making it thinner only makes it that much easier to move if you're the type of person that isn't "domestically stable".

The other benefits come from less materials used, so that's better for the environment. And the power usage will almost certainly be less than a larger TV.

Its not necessarily that thinner is necessary. But rather reduced weight and less materials. You have two 4" thick LCDs, how huge was the wall mount bracket you had to install?

With these thin LED LCDs, the materials used to make the unit is reduced (green, cost), and the weight goes down as well. So hanging a thin and light LED LCD on the wall goes from $100 mounting system requiring lots of heavy lifting, down to two screws into studs that I can do by myself in under a minute with my stud finder, drill and a level laser.

I never liked that huge wall mount kit for LCDs and Plasmas. I don't mind the two small screw holes to hang an 8-10lb TV.

Currently its only a gimmick because one has to wear the glasses.
Remove that neccessity and I for one would love to watch sports or play video games in 3d, but watching a Movie no thanks.
The 3D features should in no way be a justified way of increasing the price on these new TVs but I fear that is exactly whats going to happen and the prices for these will be way over inflated.
