Hardly. Lot of pro microsoft spin again.

Using a windows 7 PC as a U-verse box makes a lot of sense other than the fact you would always need to tie up your PC. You would also need to have a pretty good graphics card with an HDMI output for your main TV. The 360 gets around this but using the 360 controller as a TV remote wouldn't work. The Microsoft media center remote lacks some buttons needed for proper U-Verse functionality.

There is also the DVR problem. Will you be able to use the 360 or your PC as the DVR and still be able to watch different recorded programs on different TVs? Or even use the 360 as a DVR? You wouldn't get much in the way of recording time vs the AT&T dedicated DVR.

Set top U-Verse boxes can be connected through coax or ethernet cables. I don't know if it is possible to connect them through a wireless connection. That would be nice for a PC. However the throughput of the wireless connection might not be enough for smooth HD.

What I have been waiting for from U-verse is location free/slingbox functionality. Streaming the service to a laptop through the internet. If you could connect a PC to the main U-verse unit it should be possible.

In reality this announcement is almost meaningless. Far, far from a game changer. The real game changer would be off site U-verse functionality.

Iridium

Comments on Xbox 360 will support AT&T's U-Verse TV later this year

@enbadesign
"Using a windows 7 PC as a U-verse box makes a lot of sense other than the fact you would always need to tie up your PC"

Only when you were using it to watch TV, which is kind of the whole point.

"You would also need to have a pretty good graphics card with an HDMI output for your main TV. "

You wouldn't. You'd have a dedicated box at your main TV like you already do. This is for satellite boxes. Bedrooms, offices, home gyms. It's one less box to plug in in those spaces, and one less thing to lease from AT&T. As long as it's cheaper than the STB fee, it's a pretty big win.

"There is also the DVR problem. Will you be able to use the 360 or your PC as the DVR and still be able to watch different recorded programs on different TVs?"
STB != DVR. You can't use the 360 to record. You'll still have your DVR box attached to your main TV.

It's far from a meaningless change. It's a step away from provider-owned boxes and like DirecTV's PC viewer, a step toward multi-platform viewing. It's IPTV starting to rise to its potential instead of pretending to be an antiquated cable system. These things come in small steps, and this is an important one.

matt

Comments on Xbox 360 will support AT&T's U-Verse TV later this year

Ouch! CDs and DVDs are like 8-tracks to me.. bulky and outdated. Subscribe to netflix streaming, so that their numbers can force all MPAA affiliates to provide subscription models.
