Man, so we've got Dell, Motorola, HTC et al. pretty much choosing Android as THE OS of choice. It's crazy that, with the exception of iPhone OS (which should pretty much be excluded from this discussion altogether, since only Apple can make phones w/ this OS), all other mobile OSs have pretty much fallen by the wayside in the last year. I remember at the last MWC, everything was ALL about WM6.5, and hardly anything about Android. Now just 1 year later, it's the exact opposite.

Somehow for me, the fact that Dell hasn't even mentioned WM as an OS to consider speaks volumes about the fate of WM. Add that to the fact that HTC, their #1 partner, is pretty much THE name associated with "The Google Phone", and this is all bad news for MS.

WM, like Windows, has ALWAYS been around. That said, are Windows Mobile handset sales not on the decline? Is Windows Mobile a platform that the majority of mainstream users even CONSIDER (especially when not gussied up with HTC themes)?

To suggest that WM is doing "ok" simply because it was never particularly mainstream is a weak argument. They had EVERY advantage, coming into the mobile era, and they seem to have completely squandered it, at this point.

Add this to the success of Xbox 360, and how well received the Zune HD has been, and it's absolutely mind-boggling.

And then we hear only that we should have WM7 by the end of 2010, and that's supposed to be some sort of comfort to us? That's supposed to make us hold off on buying that $500 handset?

I'm not an MS hater. I WANT WM to thrive. The synergy that can be harnessed between W7, Zune HD, and WM7 is something that no other manufacturer can do. It's something worth getting excited over. But it's certainly not something I'm willing to wait until 12/2010 for.

That's definitely fair. Palm will definitely make moves this year, with its debut on Verizon, and a couple more next-gen handsets.

WebOS is very nice, yet very immature as well.
