In other words, no big deal, just take a few moments to rest your eyes by focusing on something in the distance every once in a while.

I do agree that stereoscopic is a gimmick, just like HD was, just like surround sound was, just like color was. Ultimately a story can be told and be engaging without all of that. Remember the first color movies? (Wizard of Oz, etc) they were over-saturated nightmares. It was like a rainbow threw up on the set. Movie makers followed that model for years trying to put as much vivid color on the screen as possible. It took decades before films started using understated and muted colors to tell a story. In the early days of color you would have never seen something like Shawshank Redemption.

3D has had a very similar introduction. There have been stereoscopic slides since before motion pictures, and viewmasters have continued that tradition, but stereoscopic 3D is just now starting to hit the mainstream. It is no longer the occasional gimmicky movie coming out in 3D, but literally all animated films, and some of the higher budget blockbusters. This is of course possible due to technical advances in digital projection in the cinemas making it more affordable and pleasant than previous iterations. However we still haven't quite gotten past the "throw it in your face" use of 3D, but we are getting closer. Avatar was a very subtle use of 3D and added to the dimension of the movie without being garish or distracting. I saw it and followed it up the next day with an Imax 3D nature movie and was surprised that Avatar caused me no eyestrain at nearly 3 hours, while the 45 minute Imax movie (originally praised for their 3D prowess) gave me a headache and made me want to hurl.

3D will improve, once it becomes commonplace. Movies have toned down the color, and there are much fewer distracting, over the top, surround sound moments anymore. Hollywood just needs a little time to learn to use the tool.

RandomGuy

Comments on Gunnar Optiks' swank and stylish 3D specs get the hands on treatment

I will take one of those glasses, in GunMetal Please :)

Cg006

Comments on Gunnar Optiks' swank and stylish 3D specs get the hands on treatment

So now we can all look like Bono!
