HP already uses the same motherboards for 15 and 17" models with spaces for items on the right hand side of the system. That way all the ports on the left hand side are all the same. Trackpads and speakers assembles are mostly the same, but used obviously with wider format pieces for different models. The ability to swap out new boards and chipsets into an existing chassis sure beats buying a whole new laptop when all you want is a better processor or graphics card.

kal326

Comments on Shuttle SPA and Micro SPA notebook motherboard standards launched at CES

Make the GPU and CPU upgradable, and we'll talk cash.

Dante of the Inferno

Comments on Shuttle SPA and Micro SPA notebook motherboard standards launched at CES

@Dante of the Inferno You can swap the CPU on quite a few laptops. Especially those that are offered as CTO builds. I have swapped CPU's on 3 or 4 laptops. Lenovo and HP tech manuals will usually have which chips can be used with what models and bios versions. I have swap a T7100 for a T7700 in a R61 Lenovo and replaced a T5450 in a HP with the T7100 from the Lenovo. Both have been running fine for over a year with no heat issues. GPU's are a different story, Dell and a few others have had some swappable GPUs before, but they are usually really expensive and hard to get parts.

kal326

Comments on Shuttle SPA and Micro SPA notebook motherboard standards launched at CES

Ideally, they'd spec out the option for upgradable laptop graphics *and* standard motherboard sizes. Laptops have been sorely missing such a spec for a long time now. However, there'd probably always have to be exceptions to the rule for more adventurous laptop design, as technology evolves and computer sizes/thicknesses change.

KupoCheer

Comments on Shuttle SPA and Micro SPA notebook motherboard standards launched at CES

@KupoCheer Well, they do that on small form factor desktops, too.
