Well, Technically the only 2.1 device is the Nexus one (and don't think its been "officially" released yet either), just like the Droid was the only 2.0 device for awhile. It's not like computers where you can just install a new operating system and get drivers. The Nexus one has no keyboard, the Droid does. That alone causes problems. Look at the porting work done by third parties on various forums working with the already leaked Nexus 2.1 rom and trying to port it to the Droid. Tons of problems, though many are already worked out to a degree. Keyboard backlights, GPS, landscape mode, app drawers, blah blah blah.

Motorola, now that it has access to the 2.1 source from Google, can go in and optimize it for the Droid. On the other hand, in my opinion the iPhone still excels in UI usability and performance. The Milestone is not slow, but it feels sluggish compared to the 3GS when scrolling or doing a pinch zoom.
The Android Market is way too simple and limited. There is so much room for improvements there. Also, important to note that we don't get ANY paid apps in Brazil (for now). No prevision on when we will be able to buy something on the Market. Doesn't make sense at all not being able to spend money on apps, but that's the way it is :(.
Oh, by the way, battery life (in 2.0) is definitelly bad, but the 3GS apparently suffers from the same problem. You will have to keep an USB cable with you at (almost) all times.
Despite all of this, I still would buy a Milestone instead of a 3GS. I truly believe that Android is the platform of the future. Don't know if I'm being naive, but the Droid and the Milestone should be able to share most of the codebase. The app suite is a little different, but those are just what apks should be included in the build. Of course there is a major difference on the radio (GSM vs CDMA) but I bet this is already a separate module.
