The N900 has a WVGA screen; that's a much higher resolution than the iPhone or most Android devices. When the resolution gets that high, you need the precision a resistive screen offers.

With a resistive screen, you can click on really tiny links that you just can't click on with a capacitive screen. On my N900, I can browse the web with the browser (which is just a port of Firefox to Maemo 5's UI) zoomed out all the way without any problems. Try doing that on an iPhone.

Also, the N900 comes with a sketch program that allows you to draw using the stylus, and you can download a note-taking app that lets you write on the screen as if the N900 were a literal notepad. Using the stylus, I can write on the screen and have it look completely identical to my normal handwriting (and I'm rather particular about my handwriting, as I've spent quite a bit of time teaching myself how to write in a semiserif italic hand). Try doing that with a capacitive screen.

I'll also add that my fingers are considerably thicker than average, and I have great difficulty using capacitive screens because my fingers are too big to have any kind of fine control while directly touching the screen. Fortunately, I keep my nails a bit on the longish side, meaning I can use resistive screens just fine even without a stylus, as I can just use my nails.

jgp

Comments on Nokia N900 gets first software update, but don't expect much

The store seems to be working just fine here from Australia, even without having installed the firmware update yet.

JarZ

Comments on Nokia N900 gets first software update, but don't expect much

@JarZ with or without you

linalevitich

Comments on Nokia N900 gets first software update, but don't expect much

Everywhere I have looked for info on N900, owners say the battery life is pathetic.
