The problem Google had is that there wasn't any. The iPhone stepped up and Google saw how great it was that the internet and all of Googles services were in the palm of your hand, ready in someone's pocket 24-7, not just when they bothered to sit down at a computer. So the iPhone showed the way, but was so severely limited to one carrier and one manufacturer. Other phone manufacturers and carriers fumbled around and had no response. What was clearly needed was a platform as good for internet access and as compelling as Apple's, and it would also be helpful if it was open to all manufacturers, devices, and companies, both Free and open source. Finally, it had to have the marketing presence of a true heavyweight like Google. Presto: Android. Android is a brilliant move by Google, because now hundreds of millions of people will have access to smart phones rather than just a few million iPhone users. And that means vastly more searches and access to all of Google's services. It's hard to believe you can ask why Google needs to be in the mobile OS business.

As for Google's partners, a lot of manufacturer's are now going to be selling a lot of these more expensive phones. Now all the carriers, not just AT&T, can get in on the smartphone action and the more expensive plans they generate. And not have to be at the mercy of Apple that may or may not grace them with it's presence. They can compete. What did they have before? Windows Mobile? What a joke. Even now they are least three full years behind Apple. Symbian? Just now getting it's act together.

So, I mean, who loses? I don't hear anyone complaining. It's patently obvious that Android and Chrome are free and open source. No one's forcing it down anyone's throat. Companies that get involved with it know perfectly well that their competitors get the exact same ingredients. How does providing a free platform make you a bad partner?

ArtInvent

Comments on

@Loonie If my next kid doesn't pop out with HSDPA enabled, I'm getting a divorce.

THJ

Comments on

@ArtInvent

Huh? Michael Gartenberg is making a good point. People buying into the Android platform need to understand that it is not a platform that is as unified as the general impression seems to indicate. Different companies have the freedom to use Android as they please; for example, they can skin the user interface to suite their unique preference. With the iPhone or the Palm Pre, the user interface experience is going to be uniform and consistent.

2.	Michael Gartenberg is doing the right thing to bring these issues up for discussion. Like it or not, the approach Google is taking has consequences. The question is, is the consequence going to be good for the platform or not - giving various companies complete freedom to use Android as they wish?

3.	What about Google introducing its own phone; will Google have an unfair advantage because people will associate Google’s phones as the safest bet when buying an Android device, in order to assure themselves of future compatibility with applications in the Android Market (Store)?

4.	Would Google’s sales of Android phones take potential buyers from their partners, thus reducing their market share?

5.	What is the consensus view of Google’s Android partners? Did they anticipate the current developments surrounding the Nexus One phone and does it influence their plans, moving forward? Do they really have any option? The biggest point here is that the Nexus One phone and other such phones in the future from Google has potentially the power to create a gravitational force so strong, that the publicity surrounding the Android ecosystem may inevitably benefit Google to the detriment of its partners. This is not necessarily an eventual outcome, but one that is quite possible.

Andrew Augustine

Comments on

@GoogleCEO
That last paragraph is sarcasm, right?

acies

Comments on

@ArtInvent "It's time for Google to think less about "don't be evil" and time to think about how to be a good partner and friend." Perhaps some more partners will come on board if this approach succeeds. Thus increase uniformity. Besides, official partners involved with Google are commited to maintaing a certain level of uniformity to take advantage of the Android Market.

b. counter to point 2: Michael Gartenberg has a very limited perspective. What is better than having an open platform that gets upgraded rapidly and is available to all manufacturers. Consumer gains the most as manufacturers scramble to upgarade their software over the air.

c. counter to point 3: Isn't consumer's preference for a Google branded phone good for the platform. Fragmentation is what you were complaing against in point no. 1. Consider this as Google's way of partnering manufacturers to promote a unified platform.

d. counter to point 4: Google isn't manufacturing the phone. It is branding the phone with its existing partners as the manufacturer. So, it is win-win for both Google and the partner. It would only increase consumer choice and Android Market share.

e. counter to point 5: It is obvious, Google has entered the cell phone arena in consultation with its partners. Indeed, the manufacturing partner has a stake in the success of the Google branded phone. Again, people gravitating towards Google branded phones only helps in unifying the platform. It is important for the Android ecosystem. Developers get to target their applications at a more unified platform, partners have their share, Google has its share, the Android platform finances itself for future development.

mantrik00

Comments on

@(Unverified) Its funny this article came up, cuz I was just thinking about this.

Everyone should go back and watch Macworld 2007, and watch Eric Schmidts speech. There's no advanced warning of what's coming for them and as such they're ALWAYS going to be behind.
