I love my Mac. However, computer purchases all boil down to PERSONAL PREFERENCE. So, a person might, say, use a Windows 7 tablet over some type of Mac OS tablet because of PERSONAL PREFERENCE!!!

If people want to use Apple products, they do. If people want to use a product that runs Windows, they do! Quit saying "I don't see how..." and just realize that not everybody has the same opinion on how a computing experience should be.

Besides, if we only had Apple or only had Microsoft or only had Linus, our computing experiences would most likely suck because there would be no market competition to push companies to innovate.

If you like Apple, be glad that Microsoft has a huge market share because it pushes Apple to innovate so they can gain/hold market share. If you like Microsoft, be glad that Apple has a viable market share that Microsoft is scared to lose. Well here's the deal. If it is mearly a larger iPhone, essistally a closed-platform with everything locked down to heck, then I cant fathom what would be the draw.

IPhone and Touch users? Why buy the same device twice? Get a macbook and have the best of both.

Everyone else. You have to buy it, then you will have to buy Taylor-made "tablet apps" from iTunes in order to use it. Forget just buying normal software.

And how dumbed-down will tablet apps be compared to full-featured ones? I have both Photoshop, and a tablet-centric drawing program, and Photoshop is used for all the serious work, while the tablet app, while pretty, is more gimmicky.

As to how well will it sell? About as well as any other tablet...If it is an open system. A closed system that relies on widget apps and digital magazine? Now we are in crap shoot territory.

None of the cheerleaders have spelled out what market has magically materialized in the past 6 months that has made tablets all of a sudden a "must have". Especially after all of the past talk about how awkward they are to use.

The iPod was successful as well, because PMPs also had a large market.
Tablets on the other hand have a much smaller market, as do ultra expensive, ultrathin laptops like the Adamo and the Macbook Air which haven't done very well. And Apple TV just speaks for itself, given that most PCs and consoles can do the same job for less money.

There are real dynamics here that go beyond "Apple is cool" "That's what they said about the iPhone" and "I'm soooo excited".

Like I said, this is a balancing act, and Apple is taking a huge risk in a product category that has a history. HD PMPs and touchscreen phones were new platforms, tablets are not. I have a tablet PC, unlike most folks here that are talking out of their ass about them, and have had several forms of them from the Newton, Norand PEN*KEY, and a few others. Knowing that (barely), you have to then look at existing tablets and then make reasonable observations of the limitations and acceptance of such devices, and then explore if a device from Apple could possibly overcome those that have stumped makers of these things for the past 20 years.

Lets say there is a computer maker whos name is Avocado (Has nothing to do with apple) and offers its own OS called OS Z. Why would i risk compatibility issues by buying a device that is based on a different OS. You might also understand that Apple and MS are in very DIFFERENT businesses when it comes to their OSes. Apple ONLY sells their OS with their PCs so there is no way that they can ever have the volume Windows has. Of course, trying to grasp these simple concepts and understanding even rudimentary economics completely shatters your 'straw man’ argument so you’ll likely continue living in your fantasy world.

Yeah, the iPhone UI is mostly great and really slick, but I really hate the homescreens. Way too many little icons crammed into those screens. I prefer the Android 'desktop'-like homescreen by a mile. It's much cleaner.
