Apple is making a huge gamble with their tablet despite it's buzz. Their laptops are doing so well. If it succeeds (which I doubt) it will slow the the sales of their notebook computers. The iPhone and iPod touch has slowed down the sells of the nano and iPod to the point where they have to come up with stupid new uses for the devices such as a camera on an mp3 player. It's ridiculous. Unless this tablet can compete with the e-reader market which hasn't yet lift off the ground much or compete with the wacom tablet then we may have something here. But Apple is first and formost a computer company. They should focus more and the graphic user interface experience aspect of their desktops (why not a touch screen surface to work on an iMac or adding something new to their Mac Pro line up. I think this tablet will sell well at first because of it's hype but I don't think consumer will get much out of it but an inbetween the works of an iPhone and a notebook. They will price it at a grand an that's just asking too much for the middle device. It will eventually drop in sells like the appletv which is basically a media streamer which brings nothing new to the table. There coming out with televisions now with built in wireless network that allows you to stream from your computer. Who needs an appletv for that? They should make the apple tv equipped with a dvr to compete with TiVo and other dvrs. Then consumers can record their own content from other provider. But Apple will never do that. Why? Because of iTunes. They are already making movie deals and network deals to allow you to buy content from them and in return they'll make 30% out everything they sell out of iTunes. I can't wait to see how this all pans out. With todays economy, big businesses need to learn to cut costs on subscription based content. People will find a way to get for the cheapest they can get it for even if it means stealing it. Which is why companies like apple have been working so closely with other major companies to put a stop to pirating applications and technology. It's becoming a major problem in todays world. All in all, google would probably fair better than apple with a table manufactured by HTC for one, they have a strong advertising foundation, and second that book deal they did a few months back is a Major move as well as a jump start ahead of amazon. Apple couldn't compete with that even if they tried.

dennis636223

Comments on Rumored HTC tablet project both confirmed and suspended in one fell swoop

So why do you think a 4.3" tablet wouldn't make a good phone? Everything looks great (video=amazing) on it for now, but navigating around without a stylus (i.e. using it as the advertised internet tablet- web, apps, etc.) is way more trouble than it should be when I compared it to how my iPhone screen feels. The bigger the market, the more money!! makes sense, right. The real reason why apple couldnt get the market share at first was because windows sold their same idea for cheap, and with a better ease of use in the early 90s. Then apple just slowly climbed in market share, not to mention their fan base is incredibly strong. But if apple didnt care about market share, then they would not becoming out with these new innovative devices. Example:
1. iPod (to compete with the walklman, mp3 player, cd player at the time) advantages light weight, holds more music, photos, videos content and provides a better ease of use.
2. Macbook air (a high end netbook thats very portable)
3. Appletv (Media streamer to compete with vcr, dvd, players, and audio/video recievers)
4. iPhone (..you get my drift)

And now a tablet to compete with Amazon or whoever their trying to compete with. The funny thing about it is how a lot of companies came out with their own tablet during ces (hp slate) to try and sell it a product before apple released their own. Sad part is once and if Apple decides to announce it, that hp slate wont even budge off the shelf. So what HTC plans to do is smart. But just so you know, apple is all for market share. They had their chance and they blew it, but now the opportunity to be where they want to be has come around baring gifts.

dennis636223

Comments on Rumored HTC tablet project both confirmed and suspended in one fell swoop

Shelving is a good idea.
