See, there's this thing called "money." People like it. In order to get it, they will make, build, or otherwise create stuff so that others will give them this "money." You might even say that "money" is why businesses exist in the first place.

God bless you, Engadget. I sincerely needed to read an Apple article today. I thought you'd completely forgotten about the most important tech company in the world when the stock is shooting up ever higher on heated anticipation of the Tech Product of the Year or maybe even the decade. Since Apple started the whole iPhone OS thing with the first iPhone and then the iPod Touch, they announced that iPhone users will get free OS upgrades, since they pay a monthly usage fee; however, iPod Touch users do not pay a monthly usage fee and get all of the features of the iPhone, minus calling and 3G internet, so Apple charges iPod Touch users to upgrade the OS (it's $4.95 btw). It's a small price to pay for the new features/options for an iPod Touch, which is a one time purchase anyway. If Steve Jobs so much as farts, I want to know about it. It's been rumored that there is a correlation between how long he farts and how good his keynote will be. A long, gentle fart means he's relaxed and will deliver a deliberate, well-paced demo. A quick rip fart means he's tense and will hurry through and not grab the audience's attention to the fullest. You would think a 1000 dollar tablet would at least have a full operating system! That Archos one, that costs about 500 bucks, runs Windows 7. Correct. A full OS on a tablet would be a total fail. Only nerds want to run Windows 7 with their finger.

A tablet is a different type of device, and as such needs a different type of OS. It's a far cry from the "tablet edition" Windows XP. Anyone who's used it could tell you that (especially when you roll in a pressure sensitive pen for the creative types).

People always scream that they want a lightweight OS. Well, you can't get much lighter than an OS designed for a particular device... ie iPhone OS.

You know how you pick up an iPhone or iPod Touch, and the thing turns on instantly? Or when you click on something and it loads in less than a second? That's why you want software that was written for a specific piece of hardware... everything is built for that environment.

Versus... you pick up a Windows 7 tablet, it's got to boot like a computer, and it's got the huge Windows Registry, drivers and all the other overhead of a full-blown OS. I'm not sure it's a great idea to cram an OS designed for a Quad-Core desktop into a small gadget.

I doubt Apple's tablet will be a keyboard-less Macbook running full OSX. It's probably gonna be a *gadget* that is designed to do certain things... and do those things very well.

Instead of... "let's try to run a full computer using only your finger."
