It might still be designed here but the point is that the brands (Dell, HP, et al.) will disappear. In 20 years, I would not even bet that Apple is safe. IMHO, the only that is saving Apple today is the attention to detail with the hardware, of course, their software and the integration of the 2. HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Toshiba can produce on a small scale hardware that rivals Apple. For example, Voodoo. But in the end, this too can be designed and sold under any brand and might one day.

American consumers, in general, are not loyal to brands. All it takes is a generation to prove this. Twenty years is sufficient. Acer is number 2.

Others have rightfully pointed out where American brands matter - high-end, high-performing products. If Apple remains in this category, I think that they will continue to have a strong brand - I think that this really depends on there software and integration of products. Servers and workstations on the other-hand is where American brands have a strong hold and is likely to maintain. The design and the complexity gives a real advantage to American engineers and designers. China is a huge country and only a small part of its populace is living in cities, manufacturing consumer goods for the west. There will be enough poor people from rural areas seeking wealth for a couple more years. Certainly, rioting might be a problem at some point, but I don't think it will disrupt the course of the electronics world too much: with all the production that is taking place there, a larger middle class will emerge, etc.
Of course, at some point the Chinese will be smart enough to outsource to ... poorer countries. Acer just played the game smart when they usurped the young netbook division. He's taking the baby steps, then running, without going through the walking phase.
