There are a bunch of features which you only find after tinkering around for a while. Also after the recent update some things have changed. The space key is in his specific place so when you hold the device ONLY with your right hand, you could still use the keyboard to type messages with it and easily reach the spacebar (not everyone's cup-of-tea I admit, but that's the reason nonetheless...).

2. The device is made out of plastic because of weight issues. Imagine a device like the N900 embodied with some metallic-elements - it'd weight even more than it does now... So plastic is sturdy enough, and at the same time - light.. ish :)

Rather than that (and the somewhat darkish video), I think the review was very good.

efekt

Comments on Nokia N900 review

@Chris Ziegler Read the review (gj but missing the vid where Thomas throws it down and jumps over it! :p), and the comments.

The Ovi maps is the port for v1 from Symbian (which has a much more feature rich v3.1). Nokia have said that they are working on a version designed for Maemo that should be more feature rich and optimized to take advantage of the horsepower under the hood, unlike a direct Symbiian port that has been written for ARM 11. I'd place a wager we see it via a firmware before the N97 gets native skype support! (Yes Nokia, people still remember!).

Also Chris - & this is a suggestion and not a criticism - Your reviews are objective and it seems you approach the writing from the point of the man on the street, a person who's may not like to fiddle around but expect things to "just work". Its a good approach and helps you identify flaws that geeks may overlook or forgive but will confuse others. There is no reason why usability should not be improved in areas where it can and is needed.

Trouble with it though is that you are a self identified Geek/enthusiast/mobile fanboy and Engadget mobile Maverick!.
When you point obvious flaws/inefficiencies the geeks and fellow fanboys it seems like nit-picking. We complain and explain solutions that are a 3-4 step process where you maybe expecting 1-2.

Maybe you could address this better in the future. Or continue if im totally wrong!

--------

Personal favorite feature of the n900 is the seamless integration of Cellular, Skype, GTalk, SIP, MSN, Yahoo & Twitter contacts right into the phone and the way it handles messages and calls between them seamlessly. I can stay in touch with everyone across the board without launching separate app's and logins. Not to mention that I can continue the same conversation with the person irrespective of the service or medium (pc, mac or mobile) or worrying that ill be limited by the hardware. Saved me a lot of money on roaming and min costs already :)

Red_Munk

Comments on Nokia N900 review

@Chris Ziegler
@Chris Ziegler Back in the U.S.S.R ?
This whole review reminds me of Pravda, the very notorious Soviet "Truth" newspaper.

I quote you on what you said 14th Jan when asked about the review:
"Jan 14th 2010 1:25PM on Engadget Mobile
@Cy5patrick Still working on it, I swear!
