Sound bar make perfect sense for many situations.

not everyone can have 5 speakers all over the room, let alone the cabling.

Yamaha does a great job. check yourself in a store.

I disagree. A sound bar has many excellent applications. Limited space being the most important. Good point! It would be better to get a 7.1 system and have someone fit them so all wires are hidden. P.S. I like the idea of soundbars overall - small, compact, sits under TV - hate the price tag. I'm getting quite good sound from stereo mini-system connected to the TV. Picked up my Sony HT-CT100 3.1 Sound Bar w/ Subwoofer for $250 a couple of years ago for use in my apartment. Has 3 HDMI ins and 1 Out to handle sound and video for my cable, BD player and PS3 and kicks the pants off of my TV speakers.

Now that I have my own home, I will eventually upgrade to a real 5.1 setup, but the sound and flexibility of this system for the price I paid is well worth it for me.

So, soundbars, a ridiculous waste of time for you maybe, but not for everyone.

I've had a proper set up for years and called "BS" on these sound bars until I heard one. I ended up retiring my ADA Cinema Rhapsody for an earlier Yamaha model of YSP soundbar.

Is it as nice? Not quite, but it's a lot more convenient, looks a heck of a lot better than having speakers, amps, and receivers piled up, costs less (I could buy almost 4 of these for the cost of my old receiver alone), and they actually sound pretty good.

Large speaker setups just don't make a lot of sense in small areas, if you live in an apartment or condo and want to be considerate of your neighbors, or if you want to have a living room that doesn't look like an electronics store.

The Polk sound bar 'emulates'.

ie, turn your head listening to the Polk Sound bar, and the sound from the corner is gone. (psycho-acoustics)

Turn your head with a YSP, and you still hear sound coming from the corner.

the amount of times i have heard these YSP's i would say they can produce separate channels at:
3 and 9 O'clock pretty easily.
4 and 8 O'clock are not uncommon, provided they set up the unit properly.
5 and 7 O'clock are unlikely though. unless they have the perfect room and professionally set up i haven't heard anything come from here.
As for 6 O'Clock... well i don;t think Yamaha has ever claimed they can get there anyhow.]]>Feb 18th 2010 10:42AM
