Everyone seems to have faith in Google's good nature.  However MS tried integrating their OS and browser years before everyone else.  Most people hated the idea (and still do) of Microsoft making a web OS because they feared it would give MS too much control over internet standards.  Microsoft has gone through hell dealing with legal system in Europe. It will play just about anything, no codecs required, and it's very, very low-profile.
