On every major interstate I drive on anywhere in the country, where the speed limit is set at 55mph as it is in most urban areas,  NO ONE is doing anything near the posted speed limit unless a cop car is in sight. Without the median, mode, and range the mean is pretty much worthless.  Also considering that the average was the speed limit that means a whole hell of a lot of people are speeding.  If not just the simple rush hour congestion would kill the average well below the speed limit. I was just venting on the obvious lack of correlation (stats again) with the Tom Tom fact and what happens on the road.<br><br>Basically a statistic like this from Tom Tom is so completely useless, it should not be published.  There is so much context missing to provide meaning to this one very broad stat that you can't draw a single conclusion that is worth anything.<br><br>Shame on Tom Tom for publishing it and double shame for Engadget to do little to shed light on the subject. When I has a commute to the DC area from Baltimore everyone on I-95 had to be doing at least 80 mph. I would lock in my cruise control at 69 MPH and literally EVERYONE was shooting past me. What I found most interesting is that on the way home I would drive the same speed and be shooting past everyone else. Any time I drive with GPS turned on I'm obviously in a relatively unfamiliar place, so I'm driving with less confidence, and thus less speed. GPS tells you exactly where you're going, how far until the next turn and what direction it's going to be so I drive faster because of that info and it really doesn't matter if it's an unfamiliar area its a highway for Christ sakes, not downtown NYC. I think I shaved off 15 minutes on one trip because I was racing the GPS estimate. I keep it on to inform me of traffic alerts and out of curiosity to see what routes it will send me on.  Unless I am only going 5 minutes away, it's always on (especially on the commute to/from work). For mpg there isn't any difference between the 60mph speed limit and 80-90 other than me getting to my target quicker. Tested over several miles for the past few years at cruise control. Most cars are fine in 6th gear @55mph, the lower RPMs the better for gas mileage, so 55mph would always get better gas mileage than 65 or >.
