F-Number. If the lens is slow [large F-Number] the pictures WILL suck. Period.

Most new digicams need even faster lenses [that means SMALLER F-Numbers] because the photosites are smaller and can gather less light.

But since good lenses are expensive, we continue to see high-resolution cameras with crappy lenses which in turn take, at best, average pictures.

Who wants to pay for that?

tomberarducci

Comments on Pentax confirms Optio I-10, H90, and E90 budget-friendly shooters

@tomberarducci

Good point. There are two things that rarely get mentioned. One is the maximum aperture (varies with the zoom setting) and the other the focal length equivalent to a 35mm camera. You do realize that lenses become sharper, not just in relation to DoF, when the aperture # increases. Most lenses have sweet spots above their most open aperture. Imagine if you shot landscape photos a lot? How important is a super fast 1.2/f then?

Btw, I love fast lenses, but it doesn't seem key for taking good pics depending on what you're shooting.

badison

Comments on Pentax confirms Optio I-10, H90, and E90 budget-friendly shooters

@Badison
Hi there. You make some good points. But consider this:

1. It costs nothing to put that info out there. Most cheap digicams put 35mm equivalent - who understands that? ALL of them put "megapixels" which most folks only think bigger is better. There is only one reason mfgrs leave this info off the camera - because they knowingly cheapen up the camera by using slower lenses.

2. Your point about lens sharpness is a valid one - but I think it's novel that you tell me that I'm being too technical by asking for simple f-number info to be readily available, and then mentioning a more subtle technical issue!

Bottom line - lens design is difficult. Good lenses are more expensive than crappy lenses - but why design a camera with a 12 MP lens and all these fancy exposure modes - and then slap a crappy piece of glass and an underpowered flash on it? The only place it will take great photos is outdoors or a wax museum!

tomberarducci

Comments on Pentax confirms Optio I-10, H90, and E90 budget-friendly shooters

Is it really necessary to print the word "digital" on the body of cameras anymore?
