Do you think the iPad 'magically' appeared in his hand as the newest Apple product, and all he did as a CEO was endorse it? You need to look at this from another point of view.

He's not trying to sell something that was given to him by the R&D department of Apple. He was involved with it's creation from the start- form factor, features, and even market research. He has a much bigger stake in the iPad being a good product and selling well than any of us commenting here. Also, he has been doing a pretty darn good job heading Apple recently, in case you haven't noticed.
