Xbox 360 Hard Drive accessory bumped to 250GB in Japan
On March 11th, Microsoft will kick out its 250GB external hard drive to the good people of Japan; notable, as the first time that this 250GB drive has been sold anywhere outside of a new console bundle. The slab of external magnetic storage is set to cost ¥15,540 or about $172 should it ever ship Stateside. Unfortunately, Microsoft isn't revealing its plans for that at the moment while conceding the need for more local storage for content such as software, TV shows, and movies downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace. In other words, you'll get your storage bump... someday.

@Solidstate89
I should have clarified my statement, I knew someone would call me on it, but I can't edit my posts. MS Lets you transfer files ONE time a year. I was thinking about ordering a 250 Gig HD upgrade because my current one is running out of space and I'm not able to transfer my license because MS only let's you do it ONCE a year. I recently swapped XBox's because my launch machine finally started to sound sick. I'm now locked into this new machine until next Dec. And I have a ton of DLC.
@malexandria1
Before anyone says it, yes I know the 250 Gig HD upgrade isn't available in the states - officially, but there's several people selling them on Amazon.
Dammit. I just upgraded to 120g! Well, at least I only paid $50 for it so I'm not particularly choked despite my prefacing comment.

LOL, PS3 users get 500GB for less than the price of this POS.

Ebay lately?

@PlatinumSkeet How long do you think those fake 120's and 250's will last before Microsoft bans their Xbox Live accounts?
@(Unverified)
Considering they've been working since the elite came out and are flashed exactly the same as an OEM drive. I would say pretty damn long...
I dunno what I'd use all that space for... 250 GB of DLC is a lot and who has that much LEGAL soft format music/movie? I'm not even close and I've already spent a bundle.
@Dshark
LOL
I hear ya! Only the cool kids in school had all the music cause they were either rich or knew about torrents.
@Emitor Lol, the cool kids know nothing about torrents. You must be thinking about the geeks.
@Steve2000
Well my school was nothing but geeks so we had;
Cool geeks, prep geeks, emo geeks, valley geeks, geeks, goth geeks, mormon geeks, apple geeks,...list goes on man
@Dshark
250GB = ~30 installed games. Great for people who want quick loading times and minimal noise.
@Dshark
Yes it is a lot of space; however, you comment looks like 1,000s that came before saying things like 32KB was enough a lot of extra space or noboday would ever need 4GB of RAM.
A few years from now, you will even look back at your post and laugh.
As for Microsoft and storage, yes 250gb is needed for people that like to 'hold' local content they are buyiing from Zune/XBox Live, as people are buying movies online.
Microsoft also needs to expand to offer an online storage model for XBox Live users, much like SkyDrive, but just for users to save their game saves and other content that can easily be streamed.
(I can remember having a 16KB computer and it being amazing, and then years later having a 486-33mhz with 4MB of RAM and a 200MB hard drive that at the time was more RAM and Storage than our University's mainframe.
Things change fast in technology. The 'fast pace' of change is also going to hurt the BluRay, as people will soon be using Flash cards to rent and buy movies, as the Flash prices are close to the media prices for BluRay. Why buy a BluRay when you can buy it instantly online cheaper and store it on a protected SD card or your HD, and have it support 3D standards that current BluRay drives don't support?
@TheNetAvenger Touche good sir. I never saw myself as one of those non future minded people. I just feel like, apart from the whole game install thing, that Microsoft hasn't created very many options to use up all that space. So let's hope for more options down the road. :)
@xbit
Agreed...having already replaced two DVD drives, I don't play from disc anymore and that would be helpful...
So it will cost 250$ for 250gb's right?
Indeed, if you choose to pay the MS tax. An unofficial version from a certain DE in China will set you back far less though. And it has the same off-the-shelf 2.5" HDD inside.
@grruse: But will you be able to install games to it or save games to it? If not (and I don't think you can), it's practically useless. You might as well buy yourself a cheap external drive.
@tonicboy lawl those cheap ebay drives do allow you to do everything a normal 360 drive can do, just bet on microsoft banning such drive sometime in the future, of course there is a way to stop this its called staying the fuck away from xbox live
I'm currently using a 120GB drive that I "made" myself. That is, I bought a WD BEVS drive from a computer shop, flashed custom firmware to it (legal and easy to google for), and put it in an old shell from a broken 20GB Xbox HDD. Total cost
[oops...] Total cost
[what the hell is going on with comments Engadget...] Total cost
lol, I give up.
@manifest3r
really?
@Emitor :( They deleted it. It's not fair! lol /sarcasm
68.8 cents per GB isn't too bad for a proprietary hard drive size. They could milk it for more than that if they really wished to do so.
If you're not too picky, then dealextreme has 3rd party 250GB drives for $73...
I love my MW2 bundle. The 250GB HDD is monstrous.
I would have no problem filling a PS3 with 250GB of stuff (between Qore, Demos, Betas, and Game Installs, I already have tons of trouble with 80GB). On my Xbox? Well, it's harder to do. Downloadable games tend to take up less space on the 360. It also doesn't require installs on most games. Forza 3 being the most notable exception thus far; it has an extra disc for extra content which you should install, but are not required to.
My main concern is the price... Sure, this was a great deal in my MW2 bundle, but Xbox HDDs cost too much. Still, they really should think about bringing this stateside (or they should make more "Super Elite" bundles).
@MastrCake
Come to think of it your right, you really can your hard drive up on a xbox 360 purty fast. I personally don't own one, but my brother does and I've noticed when using it that the user has such a large source of stuff to download! I was surprised at all the old games you can download & all the quote "indie" unquote games -.-. (man there are some crap "indie" games on there.
Why does japan gets everything first? Even the Sun rises in japan before the rest of the world.
Is there really nothing else good to talk about at 3A.M
.....Don't say it......
@(Unverified)
Well...I shaved my balls earlier today.
@KGB
HAHAHAAHA
Really? But do you think you can do a barrel roll still?
No seriously though.......you should never shave your pubes about 2-3 before you have any kind of meeting or test, cause the itching will drive you and the people around you crazy. Some ways to prevent the itch and survive through are.....well don't do it in the first place. If you have to cause the ol wifey is giving you the 1, 2 about it then try to reason with her to try and just have a grass top instead of bear bare. If she won't budge then here are some pointers on lessoning the itch:
1. Baby Powder! (It does wonders)
2. 100 % Cotton Underwear (with elastic strap covered with a fluffy layer of material)
3. Both Baby Powder & Cotton Underwear!
4. Man It Up! (Come on your not dying.)
5. Google on your iPad....I mean Bing on your iPad.....I mean......txt to your "good" friend what they do in this situation......if no response make sure to recover the question by saying "you were just kidding and it was just a joke."
6. Say F-it and scratch like hell!
......yup....
@Emitor
Man talk about not proof reading my spell'n & grammar. -.- And yeah we know.....
This is a place about gadgets, not itchy regrowth of pubes.
@Emitor
I put peanut butter on my balls and have my dog lick it. Works wonders every time.
Gross
1. Microsoft develop standard enclosure for any 2.5 inch SATA Drive
2. Sell enclosures in game stores
3. ???
4. Reduced profit but a happier customer base.
@ChazClout again, dealextreme sells empty xbox 360 drive enclosures, but you can only use them with 20, 60, 120 and 250GB drives... but at $11...
@TheLostSwede
I know this but it would be nice to use 'any' 2.5" hard drive.
for example say a compteting console that has detractors detracting it for having poor online and no games?
will it come with the data transfer cable?
@Emitor
2-3 Days*
USD$172 is about AUD$191.... for that money you can almost get a 2tb HDD..... or 2 2.5" 500gb HDD's.... now that is what i call a rip off. or you can do what i did, get a 20gb hdd hack and replace it with a 250gb hdd all for less than AUD$100
@dandatrk
So true, i can't for the life of me figure out why no one else seems to be saying this. Proprietary drive my ass.
buy a 320G laptop harddriver for around $70 (maybe less), mod it follow the guide on google (i mean the search results from google). put it into your xbox hd-case (follow the guide on youtube). u got a 250G XBOX-HD. many people had done that months ago.
just? WD stopped making 160GB 2.5" drives 6 months ago, you can buy 250GB HK 360 HDD's for $60-70US thats what I did
250gb for $172? It's just as ridiculous as the $60 cable to connect your ZuneHD to a tv. Exactly why I don't plan on buying the next generation xbox or any zunes, screw their stupid business practices
@Luffy lawl and i thought ps3 users were getting ripped for 80 dollar bt headsets lawlz
yay for charging 2x as much for a simple hard drive. this crap is a joke.
Probably because they can't find any OEMs still making 160GB hard drives.
