Do they just not think people NEED and optical viewfinder anymore? Does anyone offer it on a digital camera?

CallDon

Comments on Nikon kicks out new Coolpix S- and L-series cams

CallDon, i've got an old canon SD800 IS with a good wide-angle and optical viewfinder. I bought the last one used on eBay because there weren't any comparably featured new cameras. But it's a 7 MP camera and less than 4x optical zoom. You accept some sacrifices...

My newer choice is a Nikon p6000. It's also got an optical viewfinder, wide 4x zoom, is 13.5 MP and includes GPS, though it's slow to get a fix (it almost always does eventually). It's bigger than the little canon, but it's also got a bigger (1/1.7" vs 1/2.3") sensor. The little Canon's pix are excellent, but the Nikon's are better.

What I'm waiting for (greedy, huh?!) is a compact with 10 or 15x zoom and optical VF. A large sensor, relatively speaking, would be a plus, as would be the GPS.

Four upcoming cameras (Panasonic DMC-ZS7, Samsung HZ35W, Sony DSC-HX5V and Casio EX-10HG) offer 24 or 25mm wide, 10 to 15X zooms and GPS. They have small sensors like the canon 800 but milk higher res out of them and most if not all offer HD video. For small cameras (and sensors) they're an appealing bunch, but ALL lack the optical VF. It's unfortunate.

rtdunham
