Parts may need to be replaced, but usually they don't need a new gas tank every five years. The closest thing to this was the LiFePO4 development which improved the cycle life for 400 to 2000 cycles! Lithium-Thyonilchloride batteries have been proven to last 20 years in low-drain applications. A 10 Ah battery, for example, used in a beacon that draws a few miliamps every second, can do that. Totally unusable for a laptop or mobile phone, but nonetheless. I was just saying that this is impossible for a rechargeable battery, but there are primary batteries that do that. And to ensure that nobody would tell me this is different, i EXPLICITLY stated it is inapplicable for laptops and mobile devices. I would love good batteries but we keep on hearing about these batteries for ages that never come to market.   <br><br>I think we (at least I) hear about carbon nanotube batteries about 5 years ago - instant charge, nearly infinite recharges - I can't find them at Target.   Same with so many other lithium impregnated fiber batteries, hydrogen cell batteries...   <br><br>And what is with Toyota using nearly the same batteries in the Prius for a decade!?!  They are finally moving to LiPo batteries?<br><br>When my cell phone can last for 2 full days I'll be thrilled. That puts them years off commercialisation, and probably a decade off being affordable enough to replace current tech. As a historical example, Li-ion was developed in the 1980s, launched in the 1990s, and wasn't replacing NiMH in cellphones until the early 2000s. The S Type sedan from Tesla will also rock quality battery technology. And these beta cells you are  talking about have enough power to power what? Likewise the power output of a beta cell is the product of a decay function, meaning that over time the output steadily declines until the voltage asymptotically approaches zero potential. The Beta cell is interesting, but does not have the power or energy density needed to power anything useful in high power and energy applications like cell phones, laptops or electric vehicles. Batteries do not make energy or power, they only store energy in a chemical reaction. Rechargeable batteries can run the reactions forward and backwards, thus giving off or capturing electrons. And it would only be possible with low drain devices, or immensely huge batteries. Batteries store their charge on metal atoms.  Increasing a battery's charge requires packing more metal atoms into a small space.  The heavier an atom, the further apart it must be from fellow atoms.  Therefore, lighter atoms can have a higher charge density.  Lithium is one of the lightest metals we have found so far that can hold a charge in this way.  Minor improvements in the charge density will be made in years to come, but nothing substantial.<br><br>Using a fuel-based battery, like a fuel cell, will have a much higher charge-density.
