I'm solidly behind Sony eReaders as the device of choice as far as non-illuminated, long-battery-life book readers are concerned. With that out of the way, here are my thoughts on Kindle:

I think this SDK business is a half-baked effort to gain traction by Kindle which is bound to end up in infinite sadness and disappointment. If you've ever experienced the speed of eInk you know how painful it is to advance the page. Takes forever to refresh, despite the advancements in technology.

If anything, the SDK just makes Amazon look desperate in the face of the looming threat from iPad. Putting that aside, it's also seeing its margins slashed by publishers and competitive edge eroded with so many new entrants into the space - Nook, Alex, eReader Touch et al.

The barbarians are at the gate and the only thing Amazon has in its arsenal are water balloons full of Jeff Bezos tears. The future is bleak . Sudoku ain't saving this eBook reader.

zamboni

Comments on Kindle dev kit now rolling out in limited beta

@(Unverified) - Amazon doesn't care about the Kindle. They just want to sell books. If a better devices comes along they will jump right on it. Amazon knows better than *anyone* how make buying stuff from them easy. The geeky details of the current crop of e-readers is nearly irrelevant in the long term e-book (meaning content) strategy.

lens42

Comments on Kindle dev kit now rolling out in limited beta

@appsman Only problem is the best candidate has it's own competing book store which is far more convenient and sexy than Amazon's. Amazon will likely update their iPhone app to take better advantage of the iPad's screen and performance, but really what iPad owner is going to want to buy ebooks from Amazon's Kindle store over the iBookstore? People don't want to have their books in two different apps and Apple will likely offer the better user experience for the foreseeable future.

Amazon desperately needs the iPad to not hit critical mass, or they'll end up like all the iTunes music store competitors. They'll still have a viable profitable business as long as there's a market for real books, but I suspect that market will start to shrink over time as younger generations who don't have the attachment to paper that the older ones do become a larger % of the market.

madgunde

Comments on Kindle dev kit now rolling out in limited beta

@(Unverified) I don't think the eInk Kindle can compete with LCD (or better) based tablets in the long run, at least at the same price. Currently they've got the $259 to $499 advantage, though that will likely dwindle over time as its almost a given that Apple (and others) will drop prices over time. I think the Kindle COULD survive if it stays cheap enough in comparison (for a while), given it has some obvious advantages (battery life, readability outside, etc though these may vanish over the next few years as new screen technology comes along). Amazon better be planning to make their money on books, cuz they're not going to be able to make a lot on the devices. The price increases the publishers/Apple have forced on them recently may be a blessing for Amazon, if it doesn't kill the market.

Fanfoot

Comments on Kindle dev kit now rolling out in limited beta

This Kindle Kit was announced BEFORE Apple said anything about the IPAD!!! In fact the Kindle already NOW does have a couple Games built-in you may not be aware of.

I could care less about a touch screen on my Kindle. It does have a little joystick on it that works quite well to move around the screen and click on things. Also could care less about Color on a 6" eInk reader that really meant to read books, your normal everyday for enjoyment books. Not School Text books with Color Pictures and whatnot, besides you'd want a larger screen for that.

I have ZERO interest in the IPAD!!! There's NOTHING that it does that I care about. It sure isn't going to make my book reading any better. Far from it in fact. On the other hand, depending on price, the HD Slate looks more useful. Even that I wouldn't really use for ebooks, but sitting around wanting to browse the Web, and using FLASH and Multitasking, YES!!! If I had a need for something like the IPAD, I might as well buy a IPHONE!!! I'd get far, far more use out of it then a IPAD as it would be with me all the time!!! Anyone going to clip a IPAD onto their belt? Buy things with much larger pockets you can slip your IPAD into?!?!

If I didn't have a Kindle now, I'd still buy one now. The IPAD doesn't change anything other then Apple screwing up ebook prices, raising prices, trying kill the ebook market!!! Ya, thanks again for that Apple!!! I won't pay for them!!! I'll also continue to NOT buy anything form ITUNES!!! I always thought 99 cents per song was a rip-off!! Should have been no more then 50 cents per song.

Also, is it me,or aren't you tired of all this i this and i that? IPAD, IPHONE, ITUNES, IBOOKS, IMAC, etc, etc, etc, etc, really? It sounds so generic and bland. ZERO originally. Just slap a i in front of a everyday word and WOW, Apple has done it again!!!!! Apple changed it up with the whole "Apple TV" WOW!!! Just think if it was ITV!!! Maybe next time.

JBDragon

Comments on Kindle dev kit now rolling out in limited beta

@JBDragon

Calm down.
