I think Google is not really going for the "cool factor" but instead more of a "sweet/cute factor". I know this is slightly off topic, but has anyone else with a Nexus One had some severe battery issues since the recent multitouch update? I charged my phone all last night, and literally barely used it today...and it's dead. From 100% to 0% in about 10 hours with little usage. Anyone? However, I almost do not see the N1 is in the same space. It looks like a business offering to me. The palm pre is going to be the main competitor I would guess, can't get the pre in my country however so I am only going on what I have seen online.

Looks wise the HTC HD2, Hero & Touch Diamond 2 are all nice. Hey I just don't like the dated look of the N1.

I'm no Apple fan boy either, I think the Zune HD is a nice piece of industrial design, get Android on there with some phone internals and that would be mean! I am not keen on the pre's looks at all (although I know most people love its looks) and have always (with the exception of a few models e.g. the G1) liked HTCs business-like looks.
I think that a phone being a little understated (as the N1 is) is better than it trying too hard to look cool. I can't stand glossy black plastic, glossy white plastic, faux-chrome bezels, large logos etc. That's just my taste though.
