While I returned it for a DSLR 3 weeks later (thank you Costco), it was a great semi pocket-able camera with full manual control but I don't see why you wouldn't pony up to the S90. Except for the zoom range, which is a little gmicky to me because I never went more than 3x-4x, and oh yeah [!WARNING!] when zoomed in all the way the (just optically, not digitally) pictures quality suffered a lot of noise.

yule&bellow

Comments on Canon rolls out four new colorful PowerShot compact cams

@yulebellow That noise is because at the long end of the zoom, the fixed aperture goes down to f/11 or so causing the camera to dial up to a noisier ISO to compensate for low light. Hence why I will stick with short zooms.

As long as The option to dial down to a sensible 8 or fewer megapixels is still there, some of these look sweet! Although I may just use this chance to get a great closeout deal on a Powershot 980 as I'm not convinced these bring anything new over that.

The real good news here is, wide angles are becoming more pervasive across Canon's line, the rest of this is just fluff.

jay

Comments on Canon rolls out four new colorful PowerShot compact cams

@Jayratch

I was using manual mode with ISO fixed at 100, and 15 second exposures at f~7, right in between the min and max. Even the newly announced Sony Cybershot HX-5 / TX7 Point & Shot top out at 10 megapixel. Quality of the picture is much more important than a meaningless number. Even your evey-day consumer has finally got the hang of that. Just for comparison the Sony CyberShot HX5 has a same-sized Exmor Sensor compared to the Canon SX210 but has "only" got 10 MP. I just don't quite understand (¬_¬)

Numer0bis

Comments on Canon rolls out four new colorful PowerShot compact cams

@Numer0bis

Honestly, more MP means that at lower settings, I can get very low noise pictures. Also, I can shoot high and compress to lower resolutions very easily and without distortion. It also means I can shoot very wide images, and crop much easier without sacrificing the final pixel count of a cropped shot.

The 14MP sensor Canon is using is a VERY good sensor. No, it;s no full frame CCD, but you can not compare these sensors to $2000-4000 cameras. Going to 21MP, yea, that's a marketing grab. 14 is not insane, nor is it industry leading.

This is not some cheapo PnS you give to your 12 year old, this is a PnS camera for someone who actually wants to take good pics in mixed environments with little fuss which still giving SLR operators a good PnS spare that has most of the manual configuration they're used to. The ELPH series also takes GREAT action shots compared to others in the class. Nikon and Sony have a lot to learn from Canon on that point.

zelannii

Comments on Canon rolls out four new colorful PowerShot compact cams

@zelannii ok that makes sense, but will it even make use of the full sensor if I set the camera to 8 or 10 MP?

Numer0bis

Comments on Canon rolls out four new colorful PowerShot compact cams

Am I the only one who likes an Optical Viewfinder option?
