Notion Ink to have competition to encourage development for Adam reader, might release two versions
Back at CES, we were pretty excited to get our hands on Notion Ink's far out, Pixel Qi display-boasting reader, Adam. Well, Notion Ink is on the move, and encouraging development for the Tegra-powered little devil is apparently a top priority. The company has unveiled plans to hold an App Competition with one million dollars in prize money for the development of Adam-compatible software. There are no final details about the contest yet, but we think we'll probably be hearing more about it next week at MWC. Slashgear's got some interesting renders Notion Ink sent over which give us an idea of what a final production model might look like -- and it's definitely different than the prototype we saw in Las Vegas. The company also told Slashgear that it's considering having two retail versions of the Adam -- but has only said that one might measure 12.9mm thick, and the other 11.6mm thick -- so we're not sure what other differences might be in tow. We'll let you know when we hear more details about that million dollar prize money, though.

This sounds promising
@GeorgeEllwood Not only it sounds promising, but it looks promising as well. I can only imagine the ways of content delivery/creation that devs will pull off when the competition begins. More benefits for the end-user.
What are the grills for, speakers? Maybe the slimmer version will forgo the larger speakers and have a thinner lcd screen.
@dansus Cooling... it doesn't have an aluminum radiator like the iPad.
I see USB ports!!
If extra thickness = Wacom-type digitizer, this device is going to go to a whole new level!
@PaladinX13
Agreed. Getting some Wacom up in here adds a silly amount of function to this kind if device, especially with a Tegra under the hood.
This is the gadget I am looking foward to the most for this year.
Sounds like a start in the right direction!
Although a common OS for readers (like Android on phones) would make the market a lot more attractive to developers.
Definitely looking forward to how this turns out.
Adam >>>>> iPad
HDMI, Tegra 2, USB, SD Card, swivel 3MP cam, Flash support, Android. What more can you ask for?
@donsdgr81
I agree.
This is shaping out to be a great device.
@donsdgr81
don't forget that sexy pixel qi display!
is the OS android ?
this is shaping up to be a great portable device
@smeee
yes , it is Android as mentioned on the Slashgear site.
Engadget should mention that in the story and/or the tags
Good technology cannot compensate for poor execution.
16:9 screen is only good for watching movies; 4:3 comes close to replicating the natural 8.5x11 paper and is a natural fit for viewing photos.
Unless you're left-handed, you might never notice the difference, but this is a right-handed design.
@gerrrg Seeing as how pretty much every laptop and desktop these days comes with a 16:9 screen, its hard to argue that its a bad aspect ratio for browsing the web, reading or viewing photos. 4:3 is looking pretty dated these days.
@gerrrg
It does feel like a left or right handed device. need to look at the orientation of the text. It just seems to be neutral with the main mode to be in landscape.
This really is everything that the vastly over-hyped ipad should have been if Jobs had a clue
Notion Ink's Adam is turning out to be a great device. Hope they don't do something stupid in the way.
Pixel Qi technology is impressive but you know what would be even better? If someone developed a variant of OLED that acted as a passive display. Except instead of light emitting diodes it should be called....I don't know..color changing diodes? And it should be even made to double as an active OLED display. And once this technology is combined with Samsung's embedded touch sensors.....all right I'll stop. I'm starting to sound like OLPC. :)
@Xyned If it's passive/reflective it is by definition not OLED. LED means light EMITTING diode. There is good work being done on this sort of challenge by several companies right now, with Mirasol displays being one of the more promising I've seen. What you are envisioning is coming, hopefully sooner than later.
USB, Tegra, HDMI, Android, Multi Tasking, Did I mention USB!? long battery life, sexy profile, flash, better display technology etc.....
OMG if this thing comes out with a lil more expensive model that has Wacom Digitizer support, I will sacrifice a baby kitten if I have to in order to buy it!!!!
I can't stop staring into space and drooling.
Still priced around $320? I'm in for one! I just wish it would get here already.
Perhaps the two models are 1 one with 3G support and 1 without? Personally, I don't care for 3G on it, especially if it means a monthly fee.
This device seems too good to be true. I'm waiting for the "we have a problem, it's going to be delayed" message from Notion Ink.
Definitely sexy... Needs to hurry! :)
Definitely sexy... Needs to hurry! :)
aside from the camera and no sd slot in the new renders how is it "definitely different than the prototype we saw" ?
