I'd argue that if you spend more than about $1K on a gaming desktop, you're doing it wrong.

Nothin' like forking out $3500 for a computer and having it be worth 1/3 of that within 18 months. But if you're super rich, it doesn't matter. Best bang for your buck, with nigh limitless customization, since you're building it, and you choose what parts you want.

My point is, if you are spending a couple thousand dollars at a boutique store, at least do it at a good one. Going to iBUYPOWER or CyberPowerPC is tantamount to just throwing money into a shredder. They use horrible component, cheap power supplies, and they can't ship for crap. Your chances of receiving your desktop from one of those with a broken graphics card inside are pretty high. i spent 2000 on my PC including peripherals last december (2008).

no game coming out this year is going to render it obsolete at all.

A computer nerd/gamer isn't happy with the measly fps achieved by a 360, and lack of DX11 or AA...
