It wasn't ADHD, it was plain and simple boredom cause it turns out that I had a higher than expected (for my age) IQ with a high reading and math skill level. So instead of drugs, I was skipped up a grade overall and then another level for reading and math. Problem solved.
Another kid I knew was labeled ADHD and he wasn't. After six months of drugs someone finally clued in that the 'problem' was that he was a visual/tactile learner, and dyslexic. He came off the drugs, was put in GT level classes (which at our school allowed for more creative assignments) and tutored 3 times a week for his reading problems. We used to compete against each other for top spot in our class. AD/HD is a very real problem that is empirically measurable in its effect.

I'm 23 and I was diagnosed about 2 months ago. The diagnosis was two-part. It started with an interview, so the psychologist could get a general sense of my routines, behaviors, etc and whether or not they sounded like those of a person with AD/HD.

The second part was administration of a Continuous Performance Test (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous_Performance_Task). This test measured 11 different variables regarding attention and impulsivity. It is a well established test, with many studies that showed measurable differences between those without AD/HD and those with AD/HD. Specifically I was administered the Conner's CPT 2 (http://www.devdis.com/conners2.html).

In my test results one variable was literally off the chart (more than 3 standard deviations from normal), 4 were more than two standard deviations from normal, and 3 more were at least one standard deviation from normal.

Now is AD/HD over diagnosed? It's very well possible that has been the case. There are many parents who would rather medicate their children than deal with them. However, that should not stop those who are dealing with a real problem from getting the help they need.

As to the idea that AD/HD is nothing more than an "active personality." That is utter nonsense, but I can see where over-diagnosis would tend to make one believe that is the case. However, my psychologist told me that the goal of medication was symptom relief. He measures this by repeating he test, looking for improved results, and adjusting the medication as needed. But he told me that if I ever felt "like a zombie" that I should tell him and we would back off the medication. True AD/HD can be treated medicinally without a change in personality.

drumwiz86

Comments on Quotient system electronically diagnoses ADHD, oh look a bunny

@drumwiz86

I am 31 and can attest to everything you have just said.

Dave

Comments on Quotient system electronically diagnoses ADHD, oh look a bunny

@drumwiz86 As you said, the problem with ADHD is that it is extremely over diagnosed.
