But I agree with Drybones5, unless Android is tweaked (and its apps tweaked) for keyboard/touchpad interface, it will just feel akward. Google has said they believe more in HTML5 web apps than native apps. Google OS is a reflection to that commitment. Personally I think Android is great on the phone/tablet with its touch based interface and Chrome OS is great for a netbook where you have a keyboard/touchpad interface. Unless you want to do gaming, what can you do in a native app that you can't do in a web app?

Teve Torbes

Comments on

smartbook, no thanks

someone

Comments on

I want the Chrome OS... Since OSes like Chrome are stripped down to a single purpose (web browsing), and there is no overhead for things like antivirus and all the other system services in Windows or a full Linux distro, these ARM chips are more that suitable. Especially those paired with hardware h.264 processors (ION, Snapdragon, etc...), . Plus they get much better battery life and they cost far less (especially if you get an Atom machine with hardware h.264 acceleration).

If you want to run a full blown OS on a netbook, this is obviously not for you. But since I have a real PC in addition to a netbook, this would fit me fine. I just need access to my various web apps, and would like a real keyboard for long emails and docs. If I could get this for around $200 and get 8-10hrs battery life, I'd be more than happy. Plus, I have plenty of family and friends who only use their computer casually for the web, something like this would be perfect for them. Personally, I don't understand those who use a tiny, underpowered netbook to run a full OS and apps. If you have real work to do, a real low-end laptop would only cost a little more and provide you with more speed and more screen real estate.

BTW: Who said it was an full blown SSD? Its far more likely just some flash memory for storing the OS image, user data and movies/music.

Teve Torbes

Comments on

@ranqet

Sorry, not ION, I meant Tegra

Teve Torbes

Comments on

@ranqet Ah, you are correct sir, that makes sense regarding the drive. I've been using it on my netbook for class, and it's pretty nice, even if it's really early. It seems anymore that certain people on the internet are just anti-everything that's being announced recently instead of trying to see the potential uses that they might not be able to think of, like how useless local storage and a dual core processor is when all I want to do is take notes on Google Docs and listen to streaming radio while reading the news.

With that being said, from what I've used of Chrome OS (a lot), there's no reason for anything bigger than a 4GB SSD, since there's nothing stored locally and the file system is read-only by default. What is the other 60GB going to be used for, a huge swap partition?

freehunter

Comments on

@thefreehunter Ever want to watch videos or listen to music when you don't have an internet connection? I'm not sure which side you're taking, so I don't know what response you're looking for, but as much as I have seen from Chrome OS, it doesn't have (by default) hooks into the hard drive, or the ability to move files from a USB drive to the hard drive. Maybe that's changed in a newer version, or will change in the future, I don't know where the project is heading. On the other hand, Chrome OS is not built for being a media machine, that's what the iPad is built for. Chrome OS is the exact opposite of the iPad, one is a app-driven media machine, the other is a web-based internet terminal. Both of them have places in the consumer world, but you can't use something like that for things it wasn't meant to do.

freehunter

Comments on

@thefreehunter

Google have already said Chrome will have a media player to play local files.

yooo

Comments on

Sweet. Not only is there no Start menu, there's no anything - it's just Chrome, and people won't realise until they get home and unpack the thing that they can't play videos/music/use it at all without some kind of internet connection.

I just...I don't see the point. Maybe if we were talking smaller, lighter and longer-lasting than the current crop of netbooks then I could see the reasoning behind limiting yourself to only a browser, but when Samsung's own N210 (as mentioned above) can push past 11 hours while running Windows I'm confused as to why anyone would buy such a limited device. Sure, there's going to be a price differential (and perhaps the Snapdragon will aid this) but unless it's going to be >25%, I don't see a big market.

But then, what do I know?

Tom
