As I understand it any Rubix Cube can be solved in 17 moves or less. I tell this to people while they're mixing up a cube for me to solve. That way they don't sit there for five minutes mixing it up.

The reason it takes many way more than 17 moves to solve it that they are going through steps to solve it working their way from one starting side to the opposite side's last four corner pieces. But if we could think like a computer after analyzing each of the six sides then we too would be able to solve it in just a few turns.
