However, in the explicit case of Wired, I would propose that they improve their web site navigation (and monetization) instead of creating a print-like format for digital. I don't know if I speak for the masses, but I have completely switched off print monthlies in favor of blog-like online publications. Somehow they manage to have breaking news, editorial, and multimedia in a very easy to navigate format with deep integration with various web technologies. Examples would be this site, mcusa.com, autoblog.com If the print publications don't improve their web fronts, they will be replaced by new ones that manage to present a better user experience through the general purpose web.

I think the value of a tablet-class device is bringing the multi-faceted nature of the internet on the go. Phones try, but the screen is too small for casual reading. e-readers screens are too slow. Every bit of geek in me knew I shouldn't be impressed by that video, given nothing in it was particularly new or innovative. Just like the iphone, which many people (myself included) have criticised, it's the user experience that counts the most, not tech specs or how the product might stack up to the competition on paper . Even if that experience is relatively basic and unsophisticated, or even if other products do the same thing (and maybe do it faster or better) in the end if the UI is great and the apps are fun and easy to use, then Apple have proven it will not only work, but they'll be able to sell content that is readily available elsewhere for free.

This is the first bit of news about the iPad to make the product look genuinely interesting. The fastest way to lose readership is to attempt to extort money out of the readers by charging them a premium for what we get for free now. Also the fastest way to lose ad revenue, since most ads are based on readership for magazines, and on "clicks" on the web. So they lose either way if they get less people to view their "premium" paid pages. It makes much more sense to give this content away for free and keep it ad-supported, or at least give readers a choice of ad free or ad-supported options. If I pay for content, I don't want to be paying for ads which also is a problem for these magazines which basically make all their money off ad revenue. I won't pay a nickel for a digital version of a magazine or a newspaper, but I'd be willing to put up with their ads as part of the experience. Take note if you want to keep people who buy iPads reading the digital copies of your magazines and reading your magazines (and reading your ads). Don't charge for these subscriptions or you will fail. Furthermore, if any magazine or newspaper to which I currently subscribe attempts to extort as much as a penny more out of me for digital content I will drop my subsription and never again subscribe to your magazine or newspaper, ever.

steve mcmahon

Comments on Wired's tablet app goes on show: developed on AIR, heading to the iPad (video)

Upside: no more piling up a ton of magazines all over the apartment (no willpower to discard those =)

Downside: can't take the iPad with me to the bathroom =(

porkchameleon

Comments on Wired's tablet app goes on show: developed on AIR, heading to the iPad (video)

You know that's pretty cool, but I hate the fact that it's going to be like that later on. The problem I have with it, is the joy of me going out to places like Borders and Barnes and Nobles is going to grab a few magazines, getting a cup of coffee and sitting down to read them. If people are just going to get magazines at home, that kinda sucks, meaning it will bring down brick and mortar type of stores. Heck why not just turn the rest of mankind into the Matrix, and just upload everything into our brains. I think one way to get around this is similar to like the Kindle and Nook (not sure how these work but they use the wireless hot spots in the stores don't they?). Bring the iPad into the store, and the app recognizes you don't have this issue, but you are able to read it while you're in the vicinity of the store. You can choose to buy it if you like it then. But if you don't and you leave the area of the store, then you lose it on your iPad. Not everyone wants subscriptions, some people just want one issue. But I guess Apple doesn't like this model, because they'll probably handle everything through iTunes >.>

SDreamer

Comments on Wired's tablet app goes on show: developed on AIR, heading to the iPad (video)

Haven't looked a the app... but I agree in general that the days of the 'magazine' are numbered.
What makes it different from a blog and why should I be paying for it if it is digital?
Not that they don't need to make cash.
But make it off advertising.
A magazine is just a blog in a box with a date range stamped on it.
Things change.

mike

Comments on Wired's tablet app goes on show: developed on AIR, heading to the iPad (video)

@savagemike

Because companies pay less for advertising through digital content, and for the writer, the costs (time spent) remain the same. So more work for less/the same revenue.

A magazine is a lot more than a blog (at least it should be). Blogs are updated multiple times a day, and the blogger goes in and can edit information as it is updated, and if they get something wrong, people are ok with it because it's "just" a blog. With a magazine (at least reputable ones) they actually spend a lot of time researching a piece before they publish it, and an article goes through multiple reads/edits before readers see it.

If you see no difference between a blog and a magazine then obviously magazine's arn't for you, so this app doesn't target you.
