However he has tacitly conceded that, unlike Dell which just responds to others, Apple is actually trying to shape the product category.

I think Apple will do fine in defining their own category, not much for tablets in general. The only interesting non-full OS (anyone have a better term there) tablet that even looks interesting is the Joo-Joo. They'll dominate that market, but I'll still not give a damn about it. Tablets are a curious thing. The worst of all ergonomics and usabilty combined into one product. This is an OS independent feature.

Yet we all sorta want them to work, maybe We are all just victims of scifi.

What comes next indeed. Smart phone sized black box in pocket, wireless everything, augmented visual and audio, z buffered into reality with a location/motion everything in the headset and one ring on each hand using inverse kinematics plus image analysis to determine the rest. The whole unit refreshes a central mashup/streetview/3d global database which anyone on network can use to switch from augmented to virtual and relocate themselves to any place and appear in scene. As a part of that, any media to create is locational which others can access when in-situ. Oh yeah and it runs channels that allow mobs to co experience their preferred augmented version of the reality around them.

Although tablets have their flaws, they are far from "the worst of all ergonomics and usability" as you claimed. From a cognitive ergonomics standpoints, direct interaction with with an item on a display is considered one of the best forms of design when considering usability:

Instead of using directional arrows and an enter button to choose your option, you press on it directly. Now there are issues with a lack of physical feedback, however this can be done through haptic feedback, or the technology blackberry used in their Storm 2 phones. In all honesty, tablets are considerably the best (from an ergonomics standpoint) for certain tasks, however not all computer related tasks (e.g. typing). The questions is, will those tasks be important enough for people to pay for a tablet PC.

No he's not on dope. He's simply repeating what the Dell exec said.

The guy basically admitted that Apple controls the mind share and the market when it comes to phones and mp3 players.

I don't see what's wrong with the OP statement. Dell wishes they could have Apple's success.

For my part I'm not really interested in the iPad but that doesn't change the fact that it could and probably WILL be hugely successful for Apple.

Not to mention if it weren't for the Courier from MS I prob would get an iPad and I most certainly would get an iPad before I bought the Mini 5. That's not a tablet. Man, Engadget really blew this out of proportion. The Engadget article title really makes this out to be worse than it is.
