But keep in mind that this is consumer grade--Audiophiles would be pretty pissed if the audiophile grade equipment was minaturized. The electronic companies that make these did not design them to have their look streamlined with big bulky TVs. Unlike many other electronics, the heavier an audio receiver is, the higher quality of the components inside. This is the reason why these things are huge and like tanks.

On the other hand, I'm assuming that this Sony receiver is entry level, so its THD rating will be just as lousy as what this is replacing--therefore, they probably could minaturize these since I don't see how the mass consumer market would really care. Regardless, these things are still heavy as hell--who is going to ever wall mount something that weighs 35lbs and generates so much heat?

To be honest I'm not really sure how the original xbox and 360 are drastically different. Sure the 360 can stand on its side, but I've never seen one that is wall mountable. I've never really found the 360 to be super attractive either, but thats just my opinion. So I'm really confused as to what your point is.

Make it sexier? I guess they could, but it would probably still have to be the same size and would be too heavy to mount them in an alternative manner. Now lets imagine you want it to be about as thin as your TV, lets say your TV is one of the fatter LCDs, 10cm or so. Right my Onkyo TX-SR606 measures roughly 44cm in depth and 18cm in height , so assuming you want the same system, same quality of components in a 10cm deep box (assuming you don't want to go any wider, and trust me you wouldn't) you'd end up with a 79.2cm long slab. That's the best part of a metre, not very cool if you don't want to put it on the wall!
