I have a SkypeIn number already which I can use globally, I don't really need a mobile phone number as well. I'm certainly not one, and am ADDICTED to my MiFi. I share the connection with other people very often. I use Blackberry and there isn't a wi-fi tethering app for that platform. (If you can tell me about one, I'll owe you big.) I need to be able to use data while I'm on calls on my cell (CDMA EVDO can't). GSM 3G can but so far it is crappy with AT&T, and slow and scarce with T-Mobile.

If T-Mobile improves their 3G speed in my area and someone releases a wi-fi tethering app for Blackberry which can handle multiple simultaneous clients, I just might ditch my MiFi.

Sure, I pay for it, but I don't have to worry about being shut down by The Man for unauthorized tethering. Also, I'm on a grandfathered true unlimited plan (no 5GB cap) so I'm reluctant to let go of it, even though I'm not on contract.

MBN

Comments on Novatel shows off next-gen GPS-enabled MiFi, integrated 'apps' (video)

@mrkalel

Or buy a cradlepoint unit and use any carrier's dongle, in the world. First off it is a dedicated device so there no cluncky workarounds and setups to make this all happen. Second, your phone is not tied up physically or CIA a wire, you can make any receive calls and browse the web at the same time. I have or had have all the options. Currently I have a mifi and I am also tryig out the mobile Vzw hotspot on my pixie and I also have had a jailbroken iPhone running miwi. U miss calls and other messages when using these services or apps and in my experience the midi is significantly faster that pam/vzw mobile hotspot app on my pixie. I connect my old iPhone to the mifi wireless network and the pixi wifi network. Then i run speed tests on the iPhone cause there are a million appsbout there to test. WAY faster on miifi. The pixi network reports speeds barely above diaup and the wifi reports as it is adcertised to report. Mifi is more expensive. That a given. If cost is ur main issue use a different method. If you want a completly supported.official solution with easy setup and best easiest use and performance get the midi

Andybrownstl

Comments on Novatel shows off next-gen GPS-enabled MiFi, integrated 'apps' (video)

@Andybrownstl Well I use the HTC WiFi router app on my phone, and it really isn't difficult to get it going (literally one click once you've set it up). It is also not tethered by a wire, and brings the advantage of having one less SIM card, one less contract and indeed one less device to carry around with me. I can still send and receive SMSes and phone calls while it is running and haven't noticed any degradation in download speeds (when compared to wired tethering). And of course you can run apps on the phone itself, rather than within the admin page on a PC.

In fact, the recently released HTC HD mini has the same function and is about the same size as a MiFI making it very attractive indeed.

ZSX

Comments on Novatel shows off next-gen GPS-enabled MiFi, integrated 'apps' (video)

Perhaps my difference in that my setup are veriOm CDMA and Cannot do voice and data together.
