Nikon CoolPix P100 (and its articulating display) hands-on
Turns out Nikon's CoolPix P100 is quite a beaut, and our brief time taking snapshots with the compact superzoom at PMA yielded some pretty good pics with relative ease -- guess Ashton's onto something, after all, if you're not looking for something pocketable. Also of note is the incredibly sturdy articulating display, a great value-add to the $400 piece. Check out more glamor shots below.

I want one.
@iTsMe99
Same.
@SolidSnake Me too
@iTsMe99 Please buy me one.
@Waroxy Engadget giveaway? We haven't had one of those in a looong time!
@iTsMe99
I have the Nikon P90 and it's been a great little camera. I have a DSLR but it's always not the most practical camera to cart around. I have 3 lenses, a bunch of filters and a tripod in my camera backpack. So I got the P90 for it's portability and zoom. My only complaint about the P90 and hopefully it's something that was addressed with the P100 is the inside ring on the lens is for aesthetic purposes only. I would really like to have a polarizer filter to slap on, but since the rings are just for show, there's no real filter available. Hopefully with the P100 they either did away with the faux ring, or have it so you can actually screw on filters.
Other than that, the P90 is an excellent little camera and not much different than the P100.
@iTsMe99
I would.. but I cant stand anything with "easy" or "cool" in its name.
The comments from the last coverage about the P100 were interesting:

The FinePix HS10 might be the better choice...
Do you guys have ANY idea how close to the Sony HX-1 this thing looks? Down to the articulated display. Of course, I guess there are only so many ways you can throw these features together in a hand-held device.
@RocketSled yeah i have the sony H50 the articulating display looks nearly identical
If you only look at the articulating display, it totally looks like an iPhone!!!
@ndrwme
You made me rage.
How am I going to pay for a replacement monitor?
The main picture made me believe the display completed latched off the camera and became wireless :(
@jlebb Wow! I want that. You could even build smartphone apps so your blackberry or android device could fill in for the wireless screen.......
Interesting design, especially around the flash pop-up and viewfinder- very angular and boxy... reminds me of the Aston Martin Lagonda.

OMG I WANT >_
Cnet's review said picture quality was sub-par, I'm waiting for the SP-800UZ reviews.
Yeah, early reviews don't seem good. The Canon SX10 has been the King of the Superzooms for quite some time (even Canon has failed twice to match it) and Nikon isn't exactly known for their prowess when it comes to pinhead sensor cameras, so it's not exactly a surprise. Seems like a wall has been hit in terms of the technological innovation possible given the limitations of the design.
@FatDrunkAndStupid
Ok so let's say I'm in the market for a camera, you'd warrant getting the SX-10 would fit in everyway?
PS: I are camera nubz
@airbag888
SX-10 is the best image quality of the Superzooms, but no HD video. If image quality is your highest priority, and you are in the market for a Superzoom, that's your best bet. The SX-20 has slightly worse image quality, but it has HD video. So if you want a Superzoom with good image quality (but not absolute best) and HD video look at SX-20 or Panisonic's Superzoom. Superzoom is a niche market though. If you don't need all that Zoom, the latest G-series from Canon has even better image quality in a smaller body albeit without the massive zoom. If you just want regular compact camera, Canon makes best. If you want DSLR, Canon and Nikon are about equal.
The photos and specs speed my pulse up a bit. A couple of good reviews and I could be persuaded. I love it that it appears to have a an EVF (or optical?) with diopter adjustment. Bless you, Nikon.
If performance matches drive-by appeal, the P100 is enough to give the good people at Canon a run for their G-series money.
@SWA
The viewfinders on the Nikon P-series are EVF's, and they suck. Bad. Unresponsive and grainy. No point in an viewfinder unless it's optical in my opinion. Also, judging by the quality of the last Nikon (the P90), expect lots and lots of digital noise, even at low ISO's and especially when using telephoto focal lengths.
@Tsenru, I would much prefer a decent optical viewfinders. The CNET reviewer gives this camera high marks for features and says it's good to work with. Image quality, OTOH, was disappointing. Bummer
@Atkins, I have Canons and like 'em a lot, but find it hard to warm up to the post A591 models, except maybe the G11.
