Ah, lovely, the standard know-it-all engadget reader ready to put everyone down.

I'm not a CNC *operator*, I'm a CNC *programmer* and a Mechanical Engineer. I design all of the parts, and write the program to make them. Deciding how fast to spin the tool, how deep to cut, and a million other things takes a lot of experience. In order to cut out a fancy titanium iphone case without just ruining your tools and your part, you've got to have lots of skills.

Or i guess I'm making $70k/yr and rising in a recession, at only 25 years old, by just sitting and watching an LCD screen.

I've been building robots since high school and taking things apart since I was 5, so I'm really good mechanically. I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're interested in something - anything - go out and teach yourself as much as you can about it, and don't wait for school to teach it to you or you'll probably never know it that well.
The dumb luck half was that my step-mom owns the property that the company leases, and they mentioned that they need someone mechanical so I got an interview - networking with people is really important.
Now I work 50 hours a week and sometimes more, and I still never stop teaching myself things. I taught myself how to CNC parts, and that's why we bought a CNC. That saved us a lot of money too. I taught myself computer programming last year and now we ship some reasonably useful software that I wrote.
Drive and dedication get you really far. It also helps to find a small company that needs someone exceptional. Big companies usually have what they need one way or another, but at a small company you can really make a big difference.
