Which in my opinion is a huge selling point.
Google might have had a better chance if the nexus one release in the US was a worldwide release. Right now, the competition will be killing.

As far as I understood, Sense can be turned off if you wish, and you'd still get the optical track pad. Though I guess that gets rid of the biggest selling point. And then the price point becomes the biggest issue.

However, from playing with the HTC Hero, I really did fall in love with Sense. The same can likely be said about the Desire. I have a Hero and they allow you to turn Sense off if you want and just use vanilla Android. So technically, you get the best of both worlds with either phone. You just have to work a little harder with the N1. Personally, I like the idea of an optical trackpad better than noise canceling speakers.

But really, does it matter all that much? I think releasing both these phones around the same time is great idea for both Google and HTC. HTC made both phones, anyway. And of course the OS is Google's, so either way it's going to be a win for both, no matter which one sells better. I've had a very bad experience with my N1 RMA here in the US. HTC didn't keep their word and try running in circle about the whole process. It's like one of those services from a bait and switch company. But I still have hope in my dead N1 and try to give it another try.
