dude, my bog standard acer laptop has both DisplayPort and HDMI...i'd gladly trade DisplayPort for an extra usb, it's utterly useless for the majority of consumers. I have the enclosed AV cabinet HTPC setup.

I have an i945 mini running as a MythTV backend hooked up to a Hauppauge 1212. It's cores are running at 56C/57C right now. It's running a commflagging job, so the CPU has something to do.

The x86 minis are pretty good when it comes to fan noise in general.

Not killing off the Apple TV per se, but merging a Mac Mini and an Apple TV together, and in one swift blow Apple would successfully take over the HTPC arena. Especially if said Mac TV came with a Blu-ray drive.

Perhaps they should have thought to "take over the HTPC" space before the PC market finally began to explicitly address it en masse. Now the mini will be just another overpriced option with things you don't really need. Apple fanboys will continue to whine about how the lesser PCs aren't the same while ignoring all of the most important technical details.

If its for use as an HDTV and media box though (AppleTV replacement), a ultra frugal setup would be another nice option like Dell did with their Dell Zino HD. The bottom offerings are crap, but the top offering has a ultra low power AMD chip a little more powerful than a dual-core Atom and just as cool running and power sipping. Standard size harddrive would be nice too, so you could just plop in one of those cheap 2TB drives that are popping up on slickdeals all the time.

If something is announced tomorrow that is better than both HDMI and DP, would anyone relish the idea of replacing all the equipment they just bought once again?

Especially with another new standard for video hardware - 3D - making an appearance this year.

Thought that other one was USB3 for a moment, but I see now it's displaylink. Pity I don't have a single thing that uses that... It feels like the firewire tech of the display world. Seriously ... welcome to 2006 Apple. Your point about Blu Ray is spot on. Apple TV or the Mini can't be considered viable alternatives to Windows based HTPC's until they adopt (without needing a an expensive adapter) HDMI and include Blu Ray disc playback.
