Come on, you had to know that one of our first stops at CeBIT was going to be the ASUS booth to see if we could get a glimpse at the leaked 10-inch
Eee PC 1018P and 1016P. Though they will be officially announced at ASUS's press conference tomorrow we got some time to play around with the new aluminum netbooks, and they sure beat any of the plastic Eee PCs we've been groping for the past few years. The overall build quality feels great, and with the flush battery they are both seriously slim and light. We wish ASUS had equipped the systems with metal keyboards to match the expanded aluminum touchpads, but the plastic keys felt plenty sturdy under our fingers. As for specs, the placards claim that they will have the new Intel N470 processors (and some peculiar N455 and N475 CPU choices), 2GB of RAM and 10 hours of battery life. We're still trying to figure out the difference between the two models, but our guess is that the 1016P will have 3G, while the 1018P sticks just to WiFi. Also, no confirmation yet on that rumored USB 3.0, but until we find out more details at tomorrow's press conference we've got you covered with the hands-on pics and video below.

Regarding the USB 3.0 rumors...
The ports on the devices definately do not look like standard USB 2.0 Ports.
I just hope the Price will be in usual netbook range, a premium netbook just doesnt make any sense at all.
Any chance of some REAL laptops being showcased? How about some new asus or HP gaming laptops.

@kojo87 Plus testing has shown that the on board Pinetrail GPU doesn't make much difference; it's certainly no ION.
Currently graphics failings is my main gripe with netbooks.
If it would be between 300-500 I would buy it..
Asus Eee PC 1018P
This model has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and comes with either a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 of 1.83GHz Atom N475 processor. As far as I can tell, what makes these CPUs special is support for DDR3 memory.
You also get 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and support for USB 3.0. There’s also an integrated 3G modem (this may just be an option), 1GB of RAM, and a 160Gb or 250GB hard drive as well as a 44Whr battery.
The Eee PC 1018P has a brushed aluminum chassis that measures just 0.71″ thick.
Asus Eee PC 1016P
At first glance, this model looks a lot like the 1018P, but it has a few extra features including Bluetooth 3.0 and WiMAX capabilities. You also get a choice of a 47Whr battery or a higher capacity 63Whr battery.
The Eee PC 1016P comes with either an Intel Atom N450 or N455 processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB or 250GB hard drive. It has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and 3G modem (which, again, may just be an option).
This model has an aluminum chassis. The demo unit has a matte black lid, as well as what appears to be a matte display.

Despite the suspension of Moore's law Asus has made me feel like a sucker for having last year's model.
*drools* I've been looking for a netbook with similar build quality as the Booklet 3G, just cheaper. The brushed metal makes it look a lot nicer than the Booklet too.

I have been reluctant to get a netbook but I think they are finally coming around -- better specs, better overall design...now let's just hope the price on this isn't too high.

How about you order an Asus UL20A then? Should be exactly what you want. Maybe even a little more powerful.
it's amazing what brushed aluminum will do for your image. but a warning to many engadget readers: windows might take 40 or so seconds to boot, you'll still have to wait 5 agonizing seconds for word to open, 1080p might be troublesome (gasp!), I wouldn't recommend more than 10 or so browser pages in google chrome while running additional apps (bummersville), some flash games might take several minutes to load (ouchies), and don't even think about crysis with maxed out settings! it's still a netbook after all.

I know its pretty nice, but is it just me or is there maybe a little too much bezel around the screen - probably could squeak out a larger display. Maybe I am wrong and its just a proportion thing.

By the looks of it, it looks like an Apple Macbook with ASUS logo stamped on the lid. The (somewhat) aluminium unibody design and smooth edges definitely cue'd in from macs. ASUS had always expressed its desire secretly and otherwise to become the next Apple. A small step in the design direction? 'cuz otherwise they are far ahead in total shipments worldwide!
Very nice netbooks. Brushed aluminium is definitely the way to go! Lovely large trackpad and very nice chicklet keyboard. I especially like the black one. The inclusion of USB3.0 is the cherry on the cake.
The only problem I see, are the displays. 1024x600? Seriously? And ASUS, please find a way to reduce that ugly bezel of yours. Also, I hope those earlier info on matte screens are true (at least as an option). These seem to have those annoying glossy screens. (and is it me or do they look pale)
I've seen these new ones in the flesh and I'd have to say they're live up to the Eee PC DNA.
And the features they pack seem to rival that of full size notebooks as well, I'm definitely going to have to take a closer look once they hit the markets.
