Drop the processor to a simpler system-on-a-chip type of unit, and you reduce costs, board real estate required, and inefficiencies caused by interconnects between discrete components. Better efficiencies (and much lower prices for the processor) means you have more to work with for better screens and battery systems.

You probably COULD have a $150 reader, but you could have a much better (and more flexible) $200-$250 reader, with multi-function capabilities. Don't ever expect to see a new technology that has just been announced to actually hit the market for quite a while. Typically, things are either announced when there is a breakthrough for a potential product, or a product has been developed and is just starting to be trickled out to interested developers. Once the Shiny Great New Product (tm) gets into the hands of actual product development companies, only then can the true process of designing a product based on the new tech begin.

And, even after the process is done and the product hits the shelves, don't expect the price to be low until production is ramped up sufficiently to afford bulk savings.

Vrmithrax

Comments on Freescale's new i.MX508 processor could mean cheaper, faster e-readers

until it means a nice color screen i am not interested ... e-ink is too slow so who cares if it has a faster CPU?

darthgault

Comments on Freescale's new i.MX508 processor could mean cheaper, faster e-readers

@darthgault - check the Liquavista demo running on Freescale CPU: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T55Y4mvPtLc.
