If you want to change the inversion or use the security that comes with it, you need the software.  In all honestly, the software is by no means terrible. Works great on my MacBook Pro 2.8GHz!  The encryption is fantastic and the e-paper screen works great!  Even the back up software works decently. Corsair stopped selling theirs a couple years ago, and those were way too slow anyway.
